In news that broke on December 23, President Obama took a very serious parting shot at Israel when he ordered the US ambassador to the UN to abstain on a very important vote in the Security Council. The resolution, brought forth by Arab countries, prohibits the building of Jewish settlements in Judea and Samaria, also known as the West Bank.
The United States is one of a handful of UN nations with veto power, and typically supports Israel in resolutions brought against them. However, following years of tension with Israel and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, President Obama chose the opportune time to strike revenge. Some are calling it “the ultimate betrayal.” (Read more from a Christian perspective here.)
It is important to know that the land in dispute belongs to Israel. Thus, the term “occupation,” typically used in relation to Israel’s presence in that territory, is far from applicable. In the few thousands of years of world history, Palestine has never been a state and has never had possession of the land in question. Israel actually re-captured the land from Jordan during the Six Day War (1967), after being attacked by several neighboring nations (including Jordan). Regardless, the land has been disputed and argued to belong to the Palestinians.
Beyond the fact that differences between Israel and the Palestinians should be resolved via direct negotiation (not interference from other countries or resolutions by the UN), Scripture speaks very specifically about those who divide the land of Israel:
“For behold, in those days and at that time, when I restore the fortunes of Judah and Jerusalem, I will gather all the nations and bring them down to the Valley of Jehoshaphat. And I will enter into judgment with them there, on behalf of my people and my heritage Israel, because they have scattered them among the nations and have divided up my land.”
One day we will all be subject to the “Israel Test.” We will have to account for how we treated God’s chosen people, and whether or not we participated in dividing up their land. Woe to President Obama and anyone else who fails the Israel Test.
