Similar to American elections, recent Israeli elections have been filled with turmoil, accusations and attempts to trash other parties and candidates. Beyond that, Israel is a complicated place socially, historically and politically….and Bible prophecy is staging in the Middle East.
We need to look no further than the land conflict to know the depth of complications regarding to whom the land belongs. As Bible students, we know Genesis 15 (among several other passages) tells us God promised the land to Abraham’s descendants, through Isaac and Jacob, forever. Yet, there is turmoil among candidates as to how to deal with the West Bank and the Golan Heights. Having ceded the Gaza Strip to the Palestinian Authority (now controlled by Hamas) in 2005, Israel has paid a price for giving away land God promised to them.
With elections in Israel coming up tomorrow, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is fighting for his political life. Mired in allegations of fraud, he has denied the charges and fought against strong accusations from rivals hoping to dethrone him. On Saturday, he took a calculated gamble by announcing he would annex West Bank settlements if re-elected.
His relationship with President Trump has also played large in the election run-up, as well-timed US announcements regarding recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights and the United States’ commitment to Israel’s security came at favorable times in Netanyahu’s campaign.
It is virtually impossible, though, to deny that Israel is a stronger and more prosperous nation than at any other time in their 70 year history. They have recently been recognized as the 8th most powerful nation on earth, though among the smallest. Economically, Israel has never had it better.
Despite all of the above, opposition parties are intent on taking down arguably the most successful Prime Minister in Israel’s history. In the eyes of most evangelicals, Israel’s presence is constantly threatened by their historical nemesis: Persia…today’s Iran. Yet, Netanyahu, with the support of America, has withstood modern-day threats of annihilation, by drawing red lines and confronting Iranian aggression with military might of its own.
What happens if Netanyahu is defeated and the alliance with America begins to wane? We don’t know. But it certainly seems possible that Bible prophecy will be hastened. In the end, no one…not even the United States…will stand with Israel.
Indeed, the stage is being set for the day Israel will be attacked from the north, just as Ezekiel 38-39 describes. All the players are there. When that occurs, Israel will be defended, not by the US or any other nations, but by the Lord Himself!
I don’t know what this round of Israeli elections hold, but I do know Jesus rebuked religious leaders and followers for not discerning the times in which they lived. (Luke 12:54-56, Matthew 16:1-3) Do we discern the times in which WE live? We need world leaders who will lead in the ways of the Lord. Are we praying for them? Are we asking the Lord to place His man as Israel’s leader in these elections?
As Israel goes to the polls, let’s do our part by praying for Israel’s next Prime Minister. He’s going to need it!
