Anti-semitism in Europe is growing at an alarming rate, and we all remember the horrific hostage-taking and murder of four Jewish people in a supermarket in France just a few months ago. These Jews were killed simply for being Jewish.
In response, Benjamin Netanyahu (Prime Minister of Israel) and other government officials exhorted Jews from all over Europe to come home to Israel.
“To all the Jews of France, all the Jews of Europe, I would like to say that Israel is not just the place in whose direction you pray, the state of Israel is your home…All Jews who want to immigrate to Israel will be welcomed here warmly and with open arms. We will help you in your absorption here in our state that is also your state.”
“The best security precaution [for Jews] may be aliya [immigration] to Israel. I hope that French Jews will start immigrating to Israel in significant numbers.”
~Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman
It seems as though French Jews heard the invitation and have taken those words to heart! French Jews are returning to Israel hundreds at a time.
“If you have the opportunity, make Aliyah with joy!” exclaimed Pardo Tayib, one of the olim (immigrants) who gave an interview for Israeli TV. “I chose to make Aliyah first of all for my children and out of love for Israel.” In a more serious tone he said, “And because in France we aren’t finding our place.”
France is home to over half a million Jews, third only to Israel and the US, yet more than 20,000 have made their way to the Jewish homeland in the past 5 years. In fact, France was the largest source of Jewish immigrants to Israel in 2014, and experts predict the homecoming of a record 8,500 French Jews this year.
This is in fulfillment of Ezekiel’s prophecy when, in Ezekiel 37:21-22 the Word of the Lord came to Ezekiel saying:
“Behold, I will take the sons of Israel from among the nations where they have gone, and I will gather them from every side and bring them into their own land; and I will make them one nation in the land, on the mountains of Israel.”
Yes, Jews are coming from every side, into their own land! Over the years, a tremendous influx of Jews from Russia, Finland, Ethiopia, Ukraine and dozens of other places around the world have “come home” to form one nation in the land of Israel!
Rejoice with these dear French people (and others) as they fulfill the very promises of God! But in a much bigger picture, rejoice that our God…the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob…is faithful to every promise He makes. He is preparing this world right now for the final days of life as we know it. He will soon come to bring believers to meet Him in the air (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18), and He will ultimately return to earth to establish His Kingdom and set things right! (Revelation 20:1-3, for example)
Rejoice, rejoice! Jews make aliyah to Israel, but one day every follower of Jesus Christ will make aliyah to our heavenly home to enjoy eternal presence with Jesus Christ our Lord! Again I say, “Rejoice!”
Have a blessed weekend!
