What Does the Future Hold for the Body of Christ?

I hope you are finding encouragement in our America, Israel and the Church study. Based on the feedback and record numbers of visitors and views, it seems apparent many of us love and are hungry for the truth of God’s Word. Thanks for joining us on the journey.

We just finished a series on the rebirth of Israel and the coming War of Gog and Magog, prophesied in Ezekiel 36-39. The primary focus was Israel, but certainly there are huge ramifications for the church. America won’t be a player in that game, and it is becoming easier to see why as we continue to slide off the throne of world domination. Our nation is in trouble, and it is a spiritual battle we face.

Believers, do you feel pressure mounting? Do you find it disheartening that we appear to be losing every battle imaginable, and it is happening so quickly? Do you envision a cloud of doom forming over our heads?

If you missed the teachings by Dr David Jeremiah a couple days ago, I exhort you to go back and listen. (Find it here.) It seems to be the perfect introduction to our next destination of study. To summarize only a small portion of that teaching…

Francis Schaeffer once said:

“One day we will wake up and discover that the America we once knew is gone.”

~Francis Schaeffer, quoted by Helmut Thielicke, A Nation that Ignores God

Later, Erwin Lutzer said:

Like a boat caught in the mighty torrent of the Niagara River, we are being swept along by powerful cultural currents that just might put us over the brink. Daily, we are losing the war for America’s heart and mind.

~Erwin Lutzer, Standing on the Rock, Decision Magazine, September 2, 2013

That day is here. Like it or not, ours is that boat seemingly headed for a deadly tumble down Niagara Falls. What got us to this point? Politics? No. The media? No. Our government? No.

What got us here is our nation’s drift away from God. More specifically, Christians and those who call themselves Christians failing to stand strong in the face of opposition to the very values upon which our nation was founded. In Lutzer’s words, “We allowed the unthinkable to become thinkable.” We went along to get along, allowing God’s Word to be trampled, and now here is part of the carnage:

  • In 1962, the Supreme Court deemed official school prayer unconstitutional.
  • In 1973, the Supreme Court ruled that a pregnant woman’s “liberty” was more valuable than the baby she carried. Abortion became legal.
  • In the 1970’s, states across the country lowered the legal drinking age to 18.
  • In the 1990’s the onslaught to legalize marijuana began, and it is now legal (to some degree) in every single state in America.
  • In 2015, the US Supreme Court struck down all state bans on same-sex marriage and legalized it. All sorts of deviant behavior has followed.

While certainly politically-charged, these things are actually spiritual problems. As a fist in the face of God, they defy His Word, and the Biblical principles upon which our nation was founded. Undoubtedly, God has blessed America because of its Godly heritage, and because of the remnant that remains faithful to His Word. Yet, He cannot allow blatant sin to go unpunished. We’ve spit in the face of grace, and have taken illegitimate advantage of God’s glorious favor.

Thus, our boat has veered significantly off course during our lifetime. The meandering stream became a rushing river, and the rushing river a torrential flood. If God should allow history to be written of this era, I’m afraid it will be badly stained.

For at least a generation or two, we have prostituted our spiritual and national heritage in America. However, I suggest that there has never been a time in history more important than now for the church to be all that the church should be in a society wandering around in darkness! Honestly, I believe the body of Christ will grow radically stronger, but immensely smaller as apostasy drags away millions of “professing Christians.”

In the same article referenced above, Lutzer said, “…the church has always been an island of righteousness in a sea of paganism.” Indeed, the church suffered much worse than this under Roman and Greek persecution during the Middle Ages. Even now, Christians are martyred by the hundreds in North Korea, the Middle East and parts of Africa. We are not facing persecution, only the loss of something we love dearly: our nation’s heritage. Persecution could come, and we will definitely not be ready for it if we do not stand fast on the Word of God right now!

Throughout Scripture, Christians confronted pagan culture and it is time to do so in America. It is time for Christians to live out their faith, not just use the label “Christian” as a meaningless moniker. The body of Christ in America should be more alive now than ever! I remember a phrase repeated often at youth camp when I was young: You can’t stand on the Solid Rock while clinging to the last piece of driftwood! Let’s stand on the Solid Rock together!

So, we will continue our America, Israel and the Church study, but focus is moving to the church and God’s instruction about how we should live in these last days. I will continue to share current events through the “Headlines” series, but our teaching will be primarily from 1 & 2 Thessalonians! This may be the most timely and impactful study series we’ve ever done! Those 8 bite-sized chapters are chalk full of instruction and encouragement, so please invite a friend, join us here on this blog, and let’s talk heart-to-heart!
