Antisemitism: Alive and Well in America

An American family makes aliyah in June 2020.

While airports around the world are virtually shut down in terms of travel from other countries, Israel’s airport is seeing some unusual activity! Specific flights are coming and going. Why? They are bringing Jews home from around the world! Reports vary regarding the number of flights entering Israel, but there is a common theme heard from several different Israeli sources: Aircraft headed to America are leaving virtually empty, but returning full.

Despite being home to the second largest population of Jews in the world, aliyah (return to the homeland) from America historically pales in comparison to those from Russia, Europe, and even Africa. After all, life is comfortable in America and many Jews have done well for themselves!

But things are changing. Not only is America mired in a pandemic that has grown far greater than in other countries, but antisemitism has grown to proportions never imagined in America. Synagogues and Jewish community centers have been targeted, and attitudes reminiscent of Nazi Germany in the 1930’s are becoming common place.

Now, add to that the fact hate speech toward Jews is not only happening more and more, but it is also being declared legal. A liberal judge in Ann Arbor MI just cited freedom of speech as the rationale for declaring hate speech targeted toward Jews legal. (Source)

Given all that, and now the burden of the coronavirus, is it any wonder that American Jews are filing requests for aliyah in growing numbers? Perhaps that explains why full flights from America are arriving in Tel Aviv at a time regular flights are not!

Therefore say, ‘Thus says the Lord God, “I will gather you from the peoples and assemble you out of the countries among which you have been scattered, and I will give you the land of Israel.”’

~Ezekiel 11:17

For I will take you from the nations, gather you from all the lands and bring you into your own land.

~Ezekiel 36:24
