Some have asked, “What’s the latest on the Iran nuclear deal?” Well, I’ll try to answer that question as best I know.
US Congress has until September 17 to vote on whether or not to accept the nuclear deal, and it appears highly likely that Congress (both House and Senate) will disapprove of the deal. However, President Obama has vowed to veto the decision. In order to overturn the president’s veto, a 2/3 majority is required in BOTH the House and Senate. It appears highly unlikely that 2/3 of each chamber of Congress will vote to overturn the veto. Thus, as things stand at the moment, it appears Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry will have their way with a very bad nuclear deal with Iran.
However, there have been flashes of positive news (if we can trust the liberal media!) There is definitely strong opposition to the deal by most (but not all) Republicans, and some Democrats seem to be opposing the president’s deal. Other world leaders are opposed as well.
- Arizona’s own Senator Jeff Flake, one of a few Republicans who have sat on the fence, announced yesterday that he will oppose the deal. (Better late than never!)
- As of yesterday, Some Florida Democratic Congress members seem to be in opposition to the deal.
- On August 6, New York Democratic Senator Charles Schumer announced opposition.
- Democrat-turned-Independent Congressman Joe Lieberman is leading an effort to “educate and inform the American public regarding the serious shortcomings of the Iran nuclear deal.”
- According to this recent Whip List by CNN, 11 House Democrats and at least 1 Senate Democrat have announced opposition.
- Arab leaders from Saudi Arabia and other Persian Gulf states are opposed, as are Canada and most particularly, Israel.
Opposition is widespread, except in the very place it should be…the Oval Office.
While I certainly believe that our Almighty God is bigger than anything that could ever take place on this earth, I continue to encourage Christians around the world to pray. Yes, end times will ultimately come, and what we are seeing certainly brings us seemingly closer to the end. However, we have work to do before that day! Part of that work is prayer, and part of that work is to share the Good News of Jesus Christ with as many people as possible. Let’s be about our Father’s business!
I am also convinced that Washington cannot fix the problems of our nation or the world. Politics cannot fix spiritual problems! However, we can (and should be) engaged in the civil process of our nation. Yes, that means voting our values, but it also means letting our Godly values be known to our representatives in Congress. Here are some ways to do that:
- Be informed! You’ve read this far…hopefully you’re more informed than you were 5 minutes ago! There are many other sources as well, so take advantage of sound information from a Christian perspective. (Examples: Joel Rosenberg’s blog, Israel Answers blog, Amir Tsarfati’s news page)
- Contact your Senators and Representative and tell them to vote “No” on the Iran nuclear deal. (Find your House Representatives here, and find your Senators here.)
- Sign the “Not One Bomb for Iran” petition.
- Most importantly, pray to earnest to our prayer-hearing, prayer-answering, miracle-working God! After all, He is in ultimate control of it all!
Christian friends, we are living in the last hours of the last days! Let’s be found faithful when our Lord calls us to meet Him in the air!
Happy Lord’s Day!
