Ok, perhaps it is the strangest heading ever seen on this platform, but let me explain…
Over the past week or so, we have run the gamut of reports regarding President Trump’s potential actions in Iran. Depending upon which side of the argument you are on, emotions may have flipped from one day to the next! One day it’s an impending peace agreement, the next day it is war. Rinse and repeat over and over! It’s the never predictable Trump!
Yesterday, he held an emergency cabinet meeting. During that meeting he smugly quipped that Tehran didn’t believe he would “wait them out” because of political and economic pressure.
The reality is that negotiations regarding Iran’s nuclear program, sanctions, and security demands have stalled, keeping the Strait of Hormuz closed. But here is the unanswered question: Is this a huge geopolitical gamble or does President Trump actually have a plan? If he has a plan, it may be locked deep inside a genius mind using typical Iranian tactics against them. Or he could be looking for an offramp that won’t totally destroy his legacy and the future of his political party.
It is clear, though, that unpredictability is the trump card (pun intended!) the President is choosing to use, regardless of his overall plan. He apparently likes it that way, so we are well served to put our trust in the Lord for whatever comes our way!
But consider Bible prophecy. We know Iran will be intact and will join Russia, Turkey, and a couple of North African countries in an invasion of Israel that Ezekiel 38-39 clearly lays out. Might Iran be weakened by the joint American-Israeli attacks on its nuclear facilities and missile factories, and the assassinations of all their top leaders? Might Iran suffer more damage if the Trump administration decides to strike again? Yes and yes.
Will America and her allies be successful in destroying Iran as we know it? No! Destruction may indeed be heavy, but I don’t see a way Biblically that Iran can be fully destroyed.
Let’s go a step further. Despite being the world’s current superpower, the US is not mentioned in Bible prophecy. Furthermore, God’s Word hints at the status and objectives of several nations when that invasion from the north takes place. The coalition comes to “take plunder and to take booty” according to Ezekiel 38:12. They want stuff….likely Israel’s oil and gas. Each has a different motivation. Russia seems to be motivated by pure greed (they need oil and gas to keep their nation viable), Iran wants to wipe Israel off the planet (in order to usher in the Islamic messiah), Turkey’s current president desires to conquer the region and establish a new caliphate, and the North African countries seem to be “storehouses of supplies” (weapons, terrorist training facilities, ports, etc) for the Big Three!
The attack will be brutal, and those chapters reveal that no nation will come to the defense or aid of Israel. According to verse 13, many will sit on the sidelines, watching the action, and asking silly questions.
So, where is America and her allies? There is lots of speculation, but let’s consider a few scenarios:
- Perhaps America quickly spirals to the level most of Europe is today: overrun by Islamist and left without the political power to remain a superpower. (Think this is far fetched? Do a little research on the number of Islamic politicians either already in office, or seeking city, state, county or federal office in the upcoming US elections in 2026 and 2028.)
- Perhaps America implodes. Division in America has never been so great. Our Constitution is under attack. Those who hate our country are a growing number, and sadly, there is a disproportionate number of them in positions of power within our government, our infrastructure, and our industries.
- Perhaps America is attacked and rendered less capable than ever before. This may be difficult to picture, as long as other superpowers do not engage. However, we know Russia will be fully engaged and leading the coalition described in Ezekiel 38, and China and North Korea are anxious to become greater world powers.
- Perhaps the rapture occurs! When King Jesus appears in the clouds to snatch His believing saints from this planet and into the clouds to live eternally with Him (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17), it will decimate America’s military, infrastructure, and government at every level. Granted, the US is not the spiritual superpower it once was, but thankfully there remains enough believers in Christ to make a tremendous impact.
Friends, I am not advocating for President Trump to choose one option over the other. I simply pray God pours out His wisdom upon those tasked with making major decisions. Nothing is going to stop Bible prophecy. Iran is not going anywhere and will indeed be a part of the coalition that ultimately invades Israel from the north.
My prayer is that we as believers stay the course and stand strong. I pray that God grants us all wisdom, and that we seek it out and heed it. If so, perhaps Israel isn’t left standing alone on our watch. But if our nation abandons them, we must stand individually, and it will take the almighty grace of God for us to do so. Lean into God and His Word. He is our anchor, no matter how large or small the storm.
