Israel Insights: Capernaum, Jesus’ Hometown

Welcome back to Israel Insights! Each weekend I’m sharing a resource I use to prepare for upcoming Israel tours. It is so critical to be prepared from both a Bible teaching perspective and an Israeli culture perspective. Thus, I’m in study mode as I prepare to lead my next tour in October.

Today’s feature is Capernaum, Jesus’ hometown. I say it often, but this is one of my favorite places in Israel! (Yes, they are all my favorite!) Viewing the narrow streets of the small fishing village where Jesus lived with His disciple, Peter, and his family is a bit surreal. The Bible records more miracles in Capernaum than anywhere else in Israel. In my mind’s eye, I can see the woman with the issue of blood reaching through the crowd to touch the hem of Jesus’ garment, and I can easily imagine caring friends removing a piece of the thatched roof at Peter’s home to lower the lame man before Jesus in order to be healed.

I love this place and its significance. Situated on the Sea of Galilee, we know Jesus walked these shores and visited homes in the village. There is a sense of the Lord’s peace and presence there, and I love taking guests there.

So, settle in and enjoy hearing about this fabulous place. Then, perhaps consider going with us to Israel in February 2024! We’ll see Capernaum and a whole lot more, and we would love for you to go with us. Click here for more info.
