In America, we have it so easy. Even those in American poverty are better off than many people of means in third world countries. We have the conveniences of light switches, flushing toilets and microwave ovens, whereas some live only by the light of day, open outdoor facilities and a hot rock upon which to warm their food.
Yet, strikingly, if you go on a mission trip to a third world country, you find people in much worse condition than us often live happier, more content lives. Of course, I’m not talking about those in war torn places of the world, but rather out-of-the-way places in which modern conveniences have not yet reached. How are they so content? And why aren’t we?
God has immensely blessed our nation, and I am humbly grateful to be an American. But I wonder if, when our lives become too easy, we fail to see God at work, and we fail to shine the Light of Christ to those around us. Don’t get me wrong….America has sent out more missionaries than the rest of the world combined. So, we have done good things. But I wonder about our every day lives, designed to be His masterpiece. Do others know that He is God when they look at our lives?
Do those around you see Jesus when they look at you? Boy, that is a sobering thought to me. I know I haven’t attained the Christ-likeness that I want to have. But I yearn for it. How about you?
Here’s a 62-second clip encouraging us to be the representation of Jesus to others…that they might know He is God! May it encourage us to yearn for and strive for that goal! Enjoy!
