The New Covenant’s Reward

Oh my!  I’ve just about jumped out of my skin this week, studying the three great covenants and being reminded of how God wove them all together to bring about salvation for us.  It is truly amazing.

Those three great covenants are a 3-legged stool, each dependent upon the other two, and all backed by the character of God.  Here they are:

  • Abrahamic Covenant – covenant of DECISION.  God decided to bless the world with salvation through the Abrahamic Covenant.
  • Mosaic Covenant – covenant of INSTRUCTION. Because the world does not recognize a need for salvation, God gave the law to Moses to show us that we cannot earn salvation.
  • New Covenant – covenant of ABILITY. Because we cannot enter into the blessing of the Abrahamic Covenant (salvation) via the law, we must have the ability to enter a different way…the New Covenant.

Romans 15:8-9 ties it up neatly for us Gentiles:

For I say that Christ has become a servant to the circumcision on behalf of the truth of God to confirm the promises given to the fathers, and for the Gentiles to glorify God for His mercy.

Jesus became a servant to the Jewish people in order to confirm the promises of the Abrahamic Covenant, which makes salvation available to us!  Amazing!

As sinners who put our hope in the New Covenant, our sin and guilt is removed.  The Mosaic Covenant shows us our need and the New Covenant gives us the ability to enter into the Abrahamic Covenant.

But you must stick with us, as the New Covenant has a reward…an even more magnificent covenant!  It is the Davidic Covenant, and it will be the topic of next week’s study!

It is not too late to jump into the live class at CalvaryPHX in Phoenix.  We meet in Room 209 of Central Campus at 11:00 (directions here), and the study is so greatly enhanced by the discussion and interaction of the live group.  Come join us if you can.  If not, continue to follow along here.
