Mary did You Know has been recorded by dozens of artists and is a Christmas favorite.
But it is an intriguing question: Mary, did you know? Did you know your baby boy would walk on water? Give sight to the blind? Calm a storm? Raise the dead?
Furthermore, what must it have been like to have an angel announce your conception before ever having relations with Joseph?
The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name Him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David; and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and His kingdom will have no end.”
Imagine being told you will be the mother of the Son of the Most High, who would one day rule a kingdom without end! Could any of us have imagined what that meant? This had never happened before. Exactly what does it mean that one will be Son of the Most High? Exactly what kingdom would He rule?
Fortunately, God had given prophecy of the coming Son of the Most High, so though it may have come in a much different form than Mary would ever have imagined, it was not totally unknown. Yet, still so mysterious!
With the benefit of hindsight, we marvel at the birth of the Son of the Most High, and we understand the historic perspective.
But what about His Second Coming? Again, God has given us prophetic foresight of the coming of our King. Yet, we don’t fully “get it!” To some small degree, we are like Mary. We’ve heard the prophecies of His Second Coming and believe them, yet His coming will undoubtedly be in a different form than our human minds can conceive.
God is like that! If our human minds could fully comprehend the vastness of God, our God would be too small! However, while humanness prevents us from full understanding, our faith takes us to whatever depth we will allow the Son of the Most High to take us!
He is coming back again. We don’t know when, nor do we know what it will look like, but prophecy tells us so, and our faith confirms it. As you celebrate the birth of the Son of the Most High, be assured that He will come again, then will ultimately sit on the throne as King of Kings and Lord of Lords forever and ever.
The angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people; for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there appeared with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,
“Glory to God in the highest,
And on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased.”
For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be with the Lord.
