Today is it! Yom Yerushalayim (Jerusalem Day) begins this evening at sundown in Jerusalem, and because they are 10 hours ahead of us here in Phoenix AZ, the celebration may have already begun (depending upon where you live and when you read this!) We have spent several days gaining understanding as to why Jerusalem Day, and particularly this 50th anniversary of it, is so important. If you have missed our discussions, you will find them here:
- Israel’s Greatest Hour of Danger – what led up to the Six Day War
- Six Days that Changed Israel’s Future – events of the war

- Biblical Significance of the Six Day War
As to the aftermath of the Six Day War, I think we still see the same sort of hostilities that led up to the war, and the same motive: the enemies of God do not want to see fulfillment of His use of Israel as the vehicle of world redemption! Friends, the battle that has raged throughout history (and will continue to rage until the end) over Jerusalem is a SPIRITUAL battle, not a political or ethnic one! God has a plan, the enemy knows the outcome, and is determined to bring down as many as possible before our Lord returns to take us to our heavenly home! Don’t be taken down in unbelief of Jesus the Messiah.
But, let’s consider some lessons that seem to go overlooked in the aftermath. First, God has a very specific plan for His chosen people, and He will see His plan through! Israel will not…in fact, cannot…fail. If so, God would be a liar! Jerusalem will stand.
Secondly, God’s means of victory are sometimes (many times, in Israel’s case) miraculous! His ways are bigger and better than ours (Isaiah 55:8-9), and if he chooses to perform the miraculous, He will do so! Never doubt God and His promises. He intends for Israel to be the vehicle through which He brings salvation to all who will accept it, and His vehicle will not be taken out of service!
Thirdly, the power of God is supernatural and beyond our comprehension. (Psalm 18:13-15, Daniel 4:35, Job 38:4-6), so we never have to wonder who wins in the end. Have you read the last chapter? Fear not, for we are on the winning side when we stand with Him! Prophecy is not meant to scare, but to prepare. Because Jerusalem stands, our King is coming soon…are you ready?
Finally, Israel stands today, not because of her military might, but because of God’s faithfulness! That is well worth celebrating!
As the Jubilee Year celebration of Jerusalem Day kicks into full swing this evening and tomorrow, will you join me in rejoicing that Jerusalem stands? Not simply because that is good news for the Jewish people. (That would be reason enough.) But because it also signals to us that our world is not falling apart, but falling into place for the return of our King!
And he told them a parable: “Look at the fig tree [Israel], and all the trees. As soon as they come out in leaf, you see for yourselves and know that the summer is already near. So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near.”
Celebrate with Israel today, but also celebrate the fact that the kingdom of God is near!
