Biblical Significance of the Six Day War

The 50th anniversary of one of Israel’s most significant historical events is just around the corner!  Tuesday at sundown begins the 28th day of Iyyar on the Hebrew calendar and Jews everywhere will celebrate Yom Yerushalayim (Jerusalem Day).  This Jubilee Year is very significant, and commemorates Israel’s victory in the 1967 Six Day War and the reunification of Jerusalem.  I have shared details over the past few days and you may find them here:

But, we will miss the bigger picture if we do not consider the Biblical significance of God’s miracles and Israel’s victory in 1967.  So let’s not miss that blessing!

In Ezekiel 5:5, God Himself proclaims Jerusalem to be the center of the nations, and in Ezekiel 38:12, the word of the Lord came to Ezekiel, referring to the Jews as the people who live at the center of the world.  Is it any wonder they are attacked continually?

Furthermore, we noted in Israel’s Greatest Hour of Danger that the contention between the line of Isaac (Jews) and the line of Ishmael (Arabs) continues to this day. From the beginning, God intended Israel to be the vehicle of world redemption, thus, the enemy has done everything possible to prevent that from happening.  The fact that Israel has survived time and time again is Biblically significant!  If Israel does not exist, God is a liar.  No wonder He fights for her!

Also significant is the fact that Israel is not only alive, but is in her land.  Zechariah 14 (and other passages) tells us that Jerusalem will be in the hands of the Jews in the end times.  (Zechariah refers specifically to Israel’s fall to the antichrist during the Tribulation).  Not since before the Romans drove Jews out of Israel in 70 AD had Jerusalem been in Jewish control, until the Six Day War about 1900 years later.  By God’s sovereignty, Israel had to survive, and they had to come into control of Jerusalem.  That occurred miraculously during the Six Day War.

Ezekiel 36-37 tells us that God will restore the land and the people to the land.  Those prophecies have been partially fulfilled since the 1800’s when Jews began returning to Israel.  However, victory in the Six Day War was a turning point for Jewish aliyah (return to the homeland), as God began drawing Jews back to Israel in droves following that victory.  Aliyah has continued to skyrocket.

As to future Biblical significance, Ezekiel 38-39 warns of an invasion from the north, led by Russia and Iran.  Not surprisingly, Russia was a key player during the 1967 war, yet according to prophecy, it wasn’t time for Russia to lead that invasion!  Thus, God directed the heart of Russian leaders to do nothing, despite their threats of direct military action if the US did not get Israel to stand down during their attacks.

Today, the Russians are very active in the region.  Syria, just across the northern border with Israel, has become a vacuum and Russia, working hand-in-hand with Iran, has willingly stepped in to prop up the Assad regime in Syria.  That keeps chaos alive and allows Russia and Iran to position troops right on Israel’s doorstep!  Prophecy happening right before our very eyes, yet made possible as a result of the Six Day War.

While Jerusalem was reunited 50 years ago, the battle for Jerusalem continues.  Even as you read this, our President is in the Middle East for important meetings with Arab and Israeli leaders.  Among the hot topics of discussions is whether or not to declare Jerusalem the eternal capital of Israel, whether or not to move the US Embassy to Jerusalem, and how to successfully mediate a peace deal between Palestinians (Arabs) and Jews, when Arabs want to take over Jerusalem (in addition to other things)!

“Behold, I am about to make Jerusalem a cup of staggering to all the surrounding peoples. The siege of Jerusalem will also be against Judah.  On that day I will make Jerusalem a heavy stone for all the peoples. All who lift it will surely hurt themselves. And all the nations of the earth will gather against it.”
~Zechariah 12:2-3

Know this, my friends: Israel is the cornerstone of end time Bible prophecy!  Jerusalem provides clear indication that we live in those days.  We are seeing these end time signs right before our eyes:

  • Worldwide regathering of the Jews, as Ezekiel 36-37 indicate.
  • Re-establishment of the Jewish state, which occurred on May 14, 1948.
  • Jerusalem coming back under Jewish control, which is what Jerusalem Day is all about!
  • Jerusalem will become a heavy stone, injuring those who try to move it.

Jerusalem Day is an incredible celebration, not just for Israel, but for all who support Israel, and for those who see Jerusalem as a key prophetic sign.  God intended to bless all the nations of the world through Abraham (Genesis 12:3), and that blessing is world redemption.  Our Lord Jesus, the Jewish Messiah, is coming back soon to fulfilling that promise of blessing!

Rejoice on this Lord’s Day, believers!

PS: It is not too late to send congratulatory remarks to the Jewish state on her 50th anniversary of the reunification of Jerusalem!

    1. Hi Jon, thanks for following. I also appreciate your comments in the discussion of the Yad Vashem anti-Semitism online course we’re both taking. Amidst many with very different ideas, it is a breath of fresh air to read comments from those who share our love of Christ and God’s Word! Thank you!
