“Therefore, son of man, prophesy, and say to Gog, Thus says the Lord God: On that day when my people Israel are dwelling securely, will you not know it? You will come from your place out of the uttermost parts of the north, you and many peoples with you, all of them riding on horses, a great host, a mighty army. You will come up against my people Israel, like a cloud covering the land. In the latter days I will bring you against my land, that the nations may know me, when through you, O Gog, I vindicate my holiness before their eyes.
The prophet Ezekiel describes a war that will take place in the last days. A coalition (including Russia, Iran, Turkey, and others) will be led by Gog (a ruling czar) out of the “uttermost parts of the north” (Russia), and will attack Israel. There, God will “vindicate my holiness before their eyes.”
Much has been made about who Gog is, and whether or not he is alive today. I want to be clear in saying that I don’t believe we can know for sure whether or not Gog is alive today. But Russia is led today by a man who very closely fits the description of Gog. Verse 2 of Ezekiel 38 says he is the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, who most agree is likely in the region around Moscow, Russia. Verse 4 says that God Himself will “put hooks in his [Gog’s] jaws” and bring him down into battle. What are those “hooks?” Perhaps newly found oil and gas reserves in Israeli waters off the Mediterranean Coast. Those precious resources would certainly bolster a sagging economy and launch a power-hungry madman to world domination.
But we have discussed that before. Let’s consider some very recent examples of Putin’s actions that could paint him as a “Gog wannabe!”
- He has ordered action against the Baltic states, former Soviet Union states, but now a part of NATO.
- He has lined the Ukrainian border with tens of thousands of troops.
- He cut a deal with Iran which sent S-300 missile systems and other nuclear-capable equipment and technology to the rogue regime in Iran.
- He has ordered Russian troops to enter the fray in Syria in the interests of evil Syrian dictator, Bashar Al-Assad.
- His troops have targeted and killed innocent civilians in Syria (a war crime).
- He has invaded and annexed a large portion of the Ukraine.
- Russian forces, under his command, invaded the Russian state of Georgia.
- He bombed civilians in Chechnya, killing well over 100,000.
Putin is power-hungry and greedy for resources and the land they inhabit. All the while, Russian forces are massing closer and closer to Israel’s borders. Meanwhile, he is also meddling in American politics and hacking US government computers in an attempt to get the upper hand on perhaps the only power in the world strong enough to stop him. He is daring us to do so.
Could Vladimir Putin be the leader of the War of Gog and Magog, as described in Ezekiel 38? Perhaps…but we can’t be sure. But one thing I do know is that the Bible describes other evil “wannabes” such as false teachers and messiahs, who are forerunners of the real thing. Even if Vladimir Putin is not THE Gog of Magog, he is certainly a forerunner to him.
Evil abounds in our world, just as the Bible said it would in the last days. Dear friends, we’re living in it! Time on this earth, as we’ve known it, will soon give way to the “catching up” of Christ-followers to meet our glorious Lord in the air. (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17) Evil is on its last leg, and soon the Mighty Warrior will come to rule and reign!
