Isaiah 1:5-6 describes a sin sick society and I’m not so sure it doesn’t describe ours as well. Last Friday, a Massachusetts judge ruled a mistrial in the Lindsay Clancy murder case. What do the facts of the case tell us about today’s society? Several things:

• The value of life is becoming less and less.
• Abortion is going to the next level, where it is more and more acceptable to murder babies after birth as well as before birth.
• Victim mentality is more mainstream (and accepted) than it has ever been.
• Mobs hold significant sway over public opinion and perhaps even juries.

In this particular case, Clancy (a mother of 3) was likely suffering some degree of postpartum depression. Yet, she had the wherewithal to send her husband on errands to give her time to commit the heinous murder of her three children, she was able to research how long it would take her husband to drive to the places of those errands, she changed physicians like most people change clothes, collecting multiple prescriptions at each visit, and she admitted her need to heed the advice of the many medical professionals treating her mental state, yet she never did. Rather, she collected a gigantic supply of drugs to take as she saw fit. Furthermore, according to testimony, she experienced postpartum depression after each birth and had thoughts of hurting her kids before. Yet, she continued having kids, and apparently never insisted on boundaries to protect the safety of her children.

The argument for premeditated murder can certainly be made. But, for the sake of argument, let’s say she did none of the pre-meditational things listed above. At what point is it acceptable to kill your babies?

Shockingly (but not surprisingly), 11 of the 12 jurors reportedly found Clancy not guilty by reason of “lack of criminal responsibility.” (ie – insanity, which apparently, is not legal terminology in MA!) In the minds of 11 jurors, Clancy had no responsibility in taking the lives of her children. If not for one bold juror who stuck to his morals, Clancy would be a free woman today. Praise God for that juror. But it certainly tells us where we are as a society when 11 of 12 jurors and a huge radical mob across the country believes it is okay to kill your kids.

Unfortunately, we live in a “Molech society,” where the sacrifice of babies is rampant, and is totally acceptable to many. We have fought the abortion battle for decades as millions of babies were murdered in the womb. Now, we’re going after babies outside the womb. Of course, there are no surveys or statistics to guide us, but I wonder how many in the radical liberal mob who pushed for Clancy’s “innocence” have either murdered babies themselves or are at least part of the abortion coalition.

That’s what the Clancy trial tells us about today’s society, but what does God’s Word say?

• Life is precious and to be treasured. Psalm 127:3-5
• God formed each of us in the womb. He knew us, formed us, and intended life for us (both inside the womb and out). Psalm 139:13-15
• We are to deliver those drawn to death or risk God’s judgment of our deeds. (Proverbs 24:11-12)
• The punishment for those who sacrificed their babies to Molech (a burning altar) was death by stoning. (Leviticus 20:1-2)

Friends, those with mental challenges need help, and we should be emphatic about getting the help that is needed. However, we must not be drawn into sympathy for the murderer while neglecting those they murder. This case is somewhat a microcosm of society. Here is a woman who has turned from God. So much so, that she feels justified in committing the most heinous act a mother can commit toward her children. Likewise, our society, in large part has turned from God so that “everyone did what was right in his own eyes.”

That didn’t turn out well for the Israelites and it will not turn out well for us as a society. Only when we are grounded in God’s Word and responsible for our own actions will we live free of the victim mentality that advocates for lack of accountability for our actions.
