What in the world is going on? For weeks, we have watched the cat-and-mouse antics between Iran and the US since the meaningless Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed in mid-June. The stated goal was to lay foundation for a permanent peace deal, though few actually believed Iran would abide by the MOU or a peace deal for even a moment. Sure enough, Iran violated the MOU shortly thereafter, and Iran and the US have traded jabs and re-entered war since then.

Two key thoughts and a Biblical truth have occupied my thoughts for several weeks. Perhaps you have had similar thoughts. First, does the Trump administration understand the Middle East mindset? Secondly, what is America’s status, given the hudna? And thirdly, when we know the character of God, there is no need to fear.

Let’s break those thoughts down.

There is only one language known to radical Islamists in the Middle East: power. To show weakness, or to fall prey to their ideological schemes is the proverbial blood in the water amidst sharks. Regimes such as the IRGC consistently act aggressively to take advantage of those weaknesses. When the Trump administration took the boot off the neck of Iran to discuss peace, the US lost the advantage gained by the work of our heroic war fighters.

The scheme was hudna and the weakness was America’s lack of determination to finish the job. “Hudna” is an Arabic word meaning truce or ceasefire. In reality, what it amounts to is calling for ceasefire in order to give themselves time to rearm, reload, and rebuild capabilities, with no real intention of lasting peace. And that is exactly what Iran did, and the Trump administration capitulated. Why was Iran able to attack American bases and kill American soldiers? Because they were rearmed and resupplied by China during hudna. Evidence suggests that the Chinese handed off cutting edge technology that helped Iran circumvent American air defense systems. Hudna worked and American resolve to finish the job simply was not there. Because of that, America paid with the lives of soldiers.

So, where does the US stand now, in light of hudna and Iran’s new breath of life? Are we falling behind the eight ball?

It is too early to tell for sure, but evidence is rising that America may have bitten off more than we can chew. For example, it has been reported that Iran may have moved uranium enriching centrifuges and at least some amount of already enriched uranium into deep, highly fortified nuclear facilities beneath Pickaxe Mountain. Though President Trump has vowed to destroy it, Pickaxe Mountain is buried even deeper than the facilities America’s B-2 bombers reportedly destroyed in June 2025.

In addition to potential Iranian nuclear development in the depths of Pickaxe Mountain, China is said to have flown at least 5 cargo planes of enhanced military equipment into Iran during the ceasefire. Among that equipment was BeiDou 3 technology that enables Iranian missiles to penetrate American air defenses. BeiDou 3 is a Chinese invention that rivals (and perhaps surpasses) American-made GPS. If Iran is able to avoid detection of our defense systems, and if other technology is able to identify and track stealth aircraft (as reported), then the US is definitely falling behind the eight ball.

So, now to the Biblical truth that overrides it all! Ezekiel 38-39 clearly confirms that Iran will be among the attackers of Israel during the northern invasion known as the War of Gog and Magog. They are not going away! Likewise, that passage makes it clear that no one…not even the US…will come to Israel’s aid during the attack. What happens to America? Might it be that we simply don’t have the technology and/or capability to help our greatest ally in the Middle East? We have lacked the will to finish the job with Iran, and with weapon stockpiles severely depleted, there seems little chance America will have the will to fully engage in the foreseeable future.

But do not fear, my friends! Though America will surely fail as the world’s greatest superpower, we can know for certain that the Lord God will stand with Israel. We also know that, despite America’s downfall, those of us whose trust is in the Lord will ultimately spend eternity with Him! This world is not our home, so we are vain to entrust ourselves to our military, to our government leaders, or to anyone else. We may face severe challenges in America, but it cannot and will not dissolve our standing as children of God. We are secure in Christ, and He will be faithful to sustain us through every challenge.

For believers, our future is secure and our eternal home is with Jesus. If you don’t know Him, the picture is bleak. Not only will life on this earth be challenging without true, lasting hope, but your eternal life spent in hell apart from Jesus will be more terrifying than you know.
