In a last-minute dash to Washington DC, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will sit with President Trump tomorrow to discuss Iran. At stake is whether or not the Iranian regime will be left intact with their ballistic missile program and nuclear ambition alive and well.
After weeks of US military buildup, promises to the Iranian people that help is on the way, and bluster from the White House that the ayatollah and his regime should be very concerned, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner trotted to the Middle East to meet with Omani mediators to discuss a peace deal with Iran. Seemingly on the cusp of a deal that would leave Israel in the inevitable position of having to stand alone against the Iranian vow to wipe them from the face of the earth, Netanyahu rushed to Washington for tomorrow’s meeting with President Trump.
Consider these facts:
- Iran’s regime has an incredibly strong religious motivation. They believe their highest calling is to usher in the return of the Mahdi (their version of the messiah) by destroying the infidels (believed to be Jews and Christians).
- Iranians are very astute and crafty negotiators. American presidents have routinely attempted to negotiate with Iran, only to give in to subtle compromises that left the regime solidly in control of nuclear capabilities and vast ballistic missile inventory that can reach Israel and beyond.
- Trump is notorious for business deals, and many of the successful foreign ministry-related deals struck by his administration have strong business-like components. (For example, many of the conflicts the Trump team has settled revolve around impending tariffs, a business-like tool.) However, attempting political or business-style deals with a regime motivated by such extreme religious ideals seems extremely ill-advised. Based on media reports, it appears the current offering by the Americans would leave the regime intact and ballistic missiles and terror proxies off the table.
- Another common strategy for Iran is to slow walk negotiations until circumstances are more favorable to them. They are incredibly patient. They are satisfied to drag out negotiations (thus curbing military action) until Trump is out of office, hoping for Democrat leadership in America, historically much more lenient toward Iran. This strategy has proven very successful in Gaza as well. The strategy is well-implemented by Iran and its proxies.
- Iran has proven to violate previous agreements, with absolute disregard for honesty and commitment to terms of the deal. Obama’s JCPOA left Iran with billions of dollars and the ability to continue enriching uranium with no oversight, setting the regime up for this round of trouble.
It is no wonder Netanyahu is headed to the White House tomorrow.
Let’s consider these current events in light of Scripture. One thing we know for certain is that Iran will be a crucial part of the Russian-Iranian-Turkish coalition that will lead the invasion into Israel prophesied in Ezekiel 38. That prophecy, including other parties from North Africa (Phut and Cush, likely areas of today’s Libya, Sudan and perhaps surrounding areas), are already in collaboration. How far away is the Ezekiel 38 invasion?
We don’t know exactly, but prophesy scholars view that prophesy on the cusp of readiness. The table and potential triggers are set. Strikingly, Ezekiel 38 describes Israel as prosperous and living in safety and security at the time of the attack. Israel’s economy, despite years of war, is thriving; and since squashing Hamas and Hezbollah, Israel is experiencing safety and security not felt since their birth in 1948. Likewise, the chapter is clear that no nations will stand with Israel, though many will observe. But in grand style, the Lord Himself will stand up and bring victory over Israel’s enemies!
One potential objective of war with Iran is removal of the Iranian regime. Given the Ezekiel 38 prophesy, I am inclined to believe the Iranian regime is not going anywhere. Is Bible prophecy playing out right before our very eyes? If so, what does it mean for Israel? Amir Tsarfati shared his perspective, and it seems quite plausible.
October 7 was not the beginning of the war. It was a painful awakening. A moment when the veil was lifted and we were reminded that this struggle did not start that day and will not end quickly. It revealed once again that we, the Jewish people, are not meant to be like all the others. Globalism and progressive worldviews cannot redefine who we are. Our identity was shaped long before modern ideologies. We are a people who dwell alone, not reckoning ourselves among the nations, exactly as Balaam proclaimed in Numbers 23:9. Our enemies have their plans, but God has His own plan, and it is different from theirs. What they intend for destruction, He weaves into His greater purpose. Hamas, Hezbollah, the Houthis, and the ayatollah regime are still standing against us, and this war is not yet over. Yet in the midst of conflict, something deeper is taking place. Israel is standing firm. Our economy is growing. Our deterrence has been restored. We are not going anywhere. We are here to stay.
