Friends, I am super excited to share the best explanation of Jesus’ fulfillment of Yom Kippur that I have ever heard! It is fantastic!
But, let’s lay the groundwork. Sundown tonight marks the beginning of Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement). It is the second of the three fall feasts God appointed for the Jewish people, and it follows 10 Days of Awe in which observant Jews spend in contemplation and self-introspection. In the Jewish mindset, those are days of reckoning, leading to repentance for all sin committed in the year since the previous Yom Kippur. It is a solemn day, and one in which our Jewish friends hope they have overbalanced the scale to the side of goodness and righteousness. After all, their belief in salvation rests upon doing enough good works to have their name written in the Book of Life.
Yet, the Bible talks of a Messiah, Jesus, who came as the perfect sacrificial Lamb of God to take away the sins of the world. By virtue of His crucifixion (dying for our sins) and resurrection (raising again to give us new life), He fulfilled Yom Kippur!
Now, consider it in context of Hebrew scripture and Jewish mindset. This is the most amazing explanation I have ever heard, and I know it will bless you also as we enter into Yom Kippur.
G’mar chatima tova…May you have a good final seal! (You’ll understand it when you see the video!)
