Sunset this evening marks Rosh HaShanah…head of the year. It is Israel’s civic (not Biblical) new year, and it also marks the end of a record-setting year of aliyah.
“Aliyah” is a Hebrew word meaning to return to the Jewish homeland. After being dispersed by Roman destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD, Jews scattered around the world until the 1900’s when Jews began returning to the homeland. Since 1948, when Israel was reborn as a nation, aliyah has increased each decade, fulfilling prophetic Scripture such as:
For I will take you from among the nations, gather you out of all countries, and bring you into your own land.~Ezekiel 36:24
I will put My Spirit in you, and you shall live, and I will place you in your own land.~Ezekiel 37:14
