Those who trust in the Lord~Psalm 125:1-2
Are as Mount Zion, which cannot be moved but abides forever.
As the mountains surround Jerusalem,
So the Lord surrounds His people
From this time forth and forever.
Oh, the excitement of preparing to go up to Mount Zion! We are meditating on the Psalms of Ascent, a set of psalms found in Psalms 120-134 which the Israelites would sing and recite as they made their way to Jerusalem for the major feasts. Great anticipation built as they approached Jerusalem and could see the bright golden gleam of the marbled walls of the Temple, decked in gold trim! Experts tell us the Temple shown so brightly in the sunlight that gazing upon it was detrimental to eyesight!
This was the site of Jewish worship in Biblical days. The Temple is where sacrifices were made to redeem the people from their sin. Prayers were offered there. Fellowship took place there, and worship happened there.
Psalm 125 captures the heart of the people as they recognized the Lord’s presence surrounding them, and they trusted in Him so steadfastly that it was compared to the strength of Mount Zion. They acknowledged the Lord’s presence “from this time forth and forever.”
Yet, today Israel (for the most part) is an unbelieving nation. What happened? Put yourself in 1st century Jerusalem, at one of the major feasts. As you grew up Jewish, you would have been taught that your Messiah was to come, and when Jesus arrived on scene, the people were excited about a king who would save them from Roman oppression. Can you imagine being in that scene?
However, Jesus came as a humble servant, not as a conquering king. He didn’t fit the profile they had conjured up, based on their feeble understanding of the Hebrew scriptures (the Torah – first 5 books of the Bible, and the prophets). Something happened to the trust they sang about! They were deceived and trust was placed in other things.
What about you, my friend. Is your trust in the Lord as steadfast as Mount Zion? Do you sense the Lord’s presence and rest assured that it is “from this time forth and forever?” If not, deception has crept in! You see, the Lord is faithful! His love endures forever, and you are His beloved. To believe anything else is to be deceived! May I encourage you to live in the truth of His Word today?
In only a couple days, our tour group takes flight, destination: Israel. I’m praying for strengthening of our trust in the Lord as we go there, as we see His handiwork, and as we experience all He has for us. I’ll do my best to share our experiences, as time allows, so you are invited to journey with us! And please pray! Unless the Lord builds the house, we labor in vain. We are entering God’s Story, and my prayer is that He will write His Story on our hearts in such a way we’ll never be the same again!
