I will lift up my eyes to the mountains;
~Psalm 121:1-2
From where shall my help come?
My help comes from the Lord,
Who made heaven and earth.
There is something about being outdoors and witnessing God’s creation! For me, it is a sense of “smallness” in the midst of the vast universe God created. Just yesterday I was in the great outdoors hiking with a Christian outdoor adventure group several friends and I started many years ago. Once again I was reminded that the God we serve is huge, and He is able! Whatever the circumstance, our help comes from Him!
In Bible days, I wonder if the Israelites looked about them on their “hike” across the Land to the city of Jerusalem and recognized the Lord’s unlimited ability to help in times of need. Verse 4 of that same Psalm says the keeper of Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. He is diligent to watch over His own and He never tires of it.
In only a few days, our group will be in Israel. One of the obvious things we will observe is how faithful the God of Israel is! Throughout history, He has neither slumbered nor slept, but has kept Israel from extinction. He has been their help in times of need.
What about you? Are you in need of help today? The One who made heaven and earth stands ready to help. He will not fall asleep or get drowsy while watching over you, but will remain your fortress, your deliverer, your rock and your refuge! He will be your shield. (Psalm 18:1-3) As you make your way up to your own personal Jerusalem, why not meditate upon and sing this Psalm of Ascent!
Happy Lord’s Day!
