New UN Push on Israel; Israel Announces New Government Elections Next March

Two major developments regarding Israel are happening right now.

First, following internal attacks on his leadership of the Israeli government, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu fired two cabinet members, creating a dissolution of the current government and a need for elections in March 2015.  Secondly, the UN General Assembly overwhelmingly approved an Arab-backed resolution pressing for Israel to join the Treaty on Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and renounce possession of nuclear weapons and facilities.  (Of course, it’s okay if Iran, Pakistan and North Korea keep their’s!)

Similar to the US, Israel’s democratic government is elected by the people.  Unlike America, Israel has many political parties, making it virtually impossible for one party to amass a majority.  Thus, coalitions form in order to gain majority support and ruling power.  When those coalitions fall apart, the government no longer functions and elections are called.  Following months of internal strife in the Israeli government, that has happened, culminating in Netanyahu’s dismissal of two opposing cabinet members.

Mr Netanyahu is adamant about things such as national security, preserving a “Jewish state,” and dealing firmly with those who wish to bring harm to Israel.  The two dismissed cabinet members (Finance Minister Yair Lapid and Justice Minister Tzipi Livni) worked against the Prime Minister and his government by rebelling against his ideals.  Livni, for example, held meetings with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas against the government’s orders, and Lapid’s tax initiatives were seen as detrimental to Israeli defense spending (among other things).  Both opposed Netanyahu verbally and publicly.

Regardless of who is right and who is wrong, Israel’s government is now “lame duck” until the March 2015 elections.  Meanwhile, nations continue to vote in favor of Palestinian statehood, and the looming issue of nuclear weapons is facing an administration that has no power to speak with authority.

That brings us to the UN resolution regarding Israel’s lack of participation in the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).  While Iran marches steadily toward nuclear weapons, pressure is now mounting for Israel to renounce possession of nuclear weapons!  Israel has neither confirmed nor denied having nuclear weapons, and has never threatened to use nuclear weapons or any other means to destroy an enemy.  Unlike Iran (and others) who have openly declared their intent to “wipe Israel off the map.”

By the way, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is responsible for “safeguarding” nuclear facilities.  So, the same agency who turns a blind eye to what is happening with thousands and thousands of centrifuges in Iran, and who fails to see the danger of Iran having a significant number of Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBM’)…which are used primarily for delivery of nuclear weapons…now wants to “safeguard” Israeli nuclear facilities!?!  This agency sees Iran as virtually harmless, and may soon see Israel as the problem child in the nuclear playpen.

We live in a crazy, mixed up world!  One where individuals, leaders and nations do crazy things, and where prophecy is being fulfilled before our very eyes!  Reminds me of a previous time in Israel’s history when “everyone did what was right in his own eyes.” (Judges 21:25)  Things just don’t go well in that scenario!

Let’s pray for world leaders…and let’s continue to pray for a Third Great Awakening that will impact the world.  Unless and until God’s people rise up, our world will continue to spiral out of control.  Yes, the Bible says that will happen in the last days, but consider this: there are many who will die and go to hell if the end comes quickly.  Believers, let’s be ready…and let’s do what we can to exhort others to be ready.  Time may very well be drawing near.
