Hi friends! We mentioned the Hanukkah dreidel game previously and some are wondering what it’s about and how it is played. It is a simple game played by children and Jewish families during Hanukkah. In short, it is a game of chance in which kids have the opportunity to make out like bandits on gelt (chocolate wrapped in gold foil to appear as coins). However, it also has a historical component, relative to the miracle God performed on behalf of the Jewish people, and even a twist based on where you play the game!
Check out the details and significance of the dreidel game:
PS: You can purchase dreidels online or seasonally in stores such as WalMart and Target. Gelt is fun, but the game can also be played with regular coins or even buttons! It is a great way to teach the Hanukkah story and other simple Jewish principles to young children. Don’t forget the sufganiot (jelly donuts), another Hanukkah tradition, afterward!
