A Spiritual Battle the Church Must Win

This week we have focused on awakening the church to imminent dangers. As the prophet Ezekiel declared, a faithful watchman warns those in danger of what’s coming at them. Today, the church needs to hear the warning and then spread the warning of what the Bible warns lies before us in the last days.

As indicated yesterday, antisemitism may well be the last great battle of the church prior to Jesus’ return. Early on, Christians played a role in spreading antisemitism, before becoming a bit more informed of the deep roots of Judaism that support our Christian faith. In recent history, bridge-building efforts exploded as Evangelicals began to flock to Israel, more fully understanding the role Jewish roots play in our faith. Since October 7, 2023, though, antisemitism has increased exponentially, even in the church.

So, what makes the church vulnerable to antisemitism? Here are a few trends in our Christian culture today:

  • Lack of strong Bible teaching and deep engagement by believers. With the advent of “feel good” churches, devices replacing Bibles, and questionable teaching from so many pulpits, the church is susceptible to shallow understanding of God’s Word. Old Testament teaching is sometimes considered unnecessary and Israel seems to be missing from the Biblical narrative. God’s covenants with Israel and the Jewish people are vital to the church and to each believer’s faith, but seem to be neglected in many churches. This leaves the church vulnerable.
  • The untrue and unfounded accusation that Jews were “Christ-killers.” Not only does the accusation lack legitimate support, but it is also historically dangerous. This subtle form of antisemitism projects blame upon today’s Jews for Jesus’ death.
  • The false doctrine of Replacement Theology (aka Fulfillment Theology). The core claim is that, because the Jews rejected Jesus, God transferred all promises made to the Jewish people to the church. Thus, the church has replaced Israel. This foolish doctrine ignores God’s “everlasting covenants” mentioned throughout Scripture, as well as the apostle Paul’s writing to the Romans (chapters 9-11). God is NOT done with the Jewish people, and they (Jews, not the church) MUST be in the land of Israel in order to fulfill Bible prophecy. (For example, Jesus will step down on the Mount of Olives…in Jerusalem, Israel!) Yet, a surprising number of churches/pastors hold to this false doctrine. Beware church!
  • Other false doctrines such as Radical Dominion Theology. Evangelicals typically sit on the right (conservative) end of the political spectrum, and Satan is going “all in” to confuse even those in conservative Christendom. This is an attack on the “far right.” Also known as “Christ is King” theology, this false teaching implies a coming kingdom in which Christians will take dominion of the earth. In essence, we will “clean things up” then invite Jesus to return to this kingdom. The Bible teaches just the opposite in John 14:1-3 where Jesus Himself tells His disciples He is going away (ascension to heaven) to prepare a place for us, and will return to take us to be where He is. Interestingly, the Jews are often blamed for that kingdom not being established yet. Be careful! Well known conservative individuals and organizations are propagating the “Christ is King” narrative. Do not be deceived!

Friends, this is a battle the church cannot afford to lose. Antisemitism is not just a “Jewish problem.” Satan’s goal is to disconnect Christians from our spiritual roots. If antisemitism is not recognized as a danger to the church, deception will come and then apostasy will engulf the church. Romans 11 teaches us clearly that Israel is the olive tree in which we (believers) are grafted. To be cut off is to die a spiritual death!

The future of the church rests to large degree on being vigilant, Biblically sound, and proactive in battling the evil of antisemitism. Without rightly discerning the Word of God, the church will be ill-equipped to defend truth. However, stability comes when we accurately align ourselves and our churches with God’s promises and purposes for Israel. We, then, become partakers of the benefits.

How should we respond? First, dig into God’s Word to establish truth in your heart and mind. Secondly, take a stand! Speak out regarding the truth of God’s Word as it applies to Israel. Thirdly, put your faith in action. Educate others to what you know about Israel. Lead a Bible study (at church or at home), host a discussion group, or use social media to share truth.

The clouds are gathering and the storm is coming. Will your church heed and share the warning? What about you? Are you prepared for the storm? Prepare yourself, then be reminded that God will never send you into a storm without His presence! (Isaiah 43:2)
