Israel Insights: The Southern Steps

Hey friends, I hope you are enjoying studying alongside me as I prepare for my October tour to Israel. It is so important to have fresh insights Biblically, culturally and even from a modern perspective at times as we strive to make our EXPERIENCE ISRAEL Tours the absolute best they can be! By the way, October’s tour is full, but another one is just around the corner! Our February 2024 tour still has seats available and I would love for you to fill them!

Throughout Israel, there are many areas we know Jesus lived, travelled and taught. However, there are surprisingly few places in Israel we can say with 100% absolute certainty that Jesus’ foot most assuredly touched there. The Southern Steps of Temple Mount is one of those places.

Actual stones from the time of Jesus are still intact as that grand stairway leads to what we know to be the entrance to Temple Mount. Though the rich and privileged had a different way to enter Temple Mount, “commoners” such as Jesus and his family (and millions more!) would have entered via the Southern Steps. It is a spot you can say, “Jesus definitely walked here.”

Ascending those steps brings a sense of reverence and awe as we imagine following Jesus 2,000 years ago. Looking south from the Southern Steps you can see the City of David (the original Jerusalem) and between the two are dozens (if not hundreds) of excavated mikvot (ritual baths) used for required cleansing of oneself before entering the Temple. The area screams with authenticity of the Bible’s representation of what Temple life and worship would have been like prior to and including in Jesus’ day.

It is a fabulous place, and here is a look at it. Enjoy…then come join us as we walk those exact steps in February 2024!
