After exchanges of missile and drone attacks, the question is rising: Is America at war with Iran?
Iraqi bases near Baghdad and outposts in Syria housing US soldiers have been attacked by Iranian-backed operatives at least three times in the past 24 hours, and for the third day in a row. The method of attack has been primarily drones, which have been shot down by C-RAM and other defensive weapons. (“Soleimani’s Revenge” was found scrawled on some of the downed drones.) American forces have also responded by attacking Iranian targets in both countries.
The latest escalation is a response to the second-year anniversary of the American assassination of Iranian General Qassam Soleimani on January 2, 2020. Approved by then-President Trump, the US military launched a drone strike on the vehicle in which Soleimani and a high-ranking Hezbollah commander were riding. The two (along with others) had wrapped up strategy sessions in which attacks on Israeli and American interests were discussed.
