Open the Church!

California pastors plan tp reopen churches despite stay-at-home ...

Believers, it’s time!

  • It’s time to live by faith, not by fear…
  • It’s time to shut off the computer and gather as believers, just as the Bible commands…
  • It’s time to stop listening to “authorities” who care nothing about the well-being of citizens, but only about “reshaping” our country…
  • It’s time for us to worship together…
  • It’s time for us to “be the church” inwardly and outwardly…
  • It’s time for us to rebuild what the enemy has torn down!

When opening the church was first suggested weeks ago (Part 8 of this study), with the hope God would bring about an awakening on Pentecost, some politely agreed, while others strongly condemned the idea, citing Paul’s commandment in Romans 13:1-5, regarding submission to governing authorities.

To be clear, it is not a good idea to ignore the Bible’s commands. Yet, it is imperative to consider three things in this regard. First, what does that passage really warn us against? Verse 2 says that he who resists authority opposes the ordinance of God. Well, what is the ordinance of God? God’s Word tells us not to forsake gathering together as the body of Christ. (Hebrews 10:25) Regathering together is not opposing God’s ordinance, but rather obeying it! Furthermore, verse 4 tells us we should be afraid if we do evil. Is regathering evil?

Secondly, in the end, the Bible says there will be a falling away from sound, Biblical teaching (apostasy). What better foundation for apostasy than the closing of our churches, stifling opportunities to hear and live out God’s Word as the body of Christ?

Thirdly, God has indeed given us civil authorities we should obey. Yet, we also serve a higher authority. Should a governing authority command something different than our Ultimate Authority (God)? Ultimately, who should we obey?

Meanwhile, while churches are closed, hopelessness abounds, and is evident in skyrocketing rates of domestic violence, drug abuse, suicides, child abuse, depression and many other social ills. Churches, by design, ought to be beacons of hope. As believers, we are light in a dark world, and when we gather together, our light shines brightly.

14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; 15 nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

~Matthew 15:14-16

Closed churches are lights put under a basket of fear. We serve a God much greater than viruses, riots, face masks, politicians and elections, and the light of Jesus Christ must shine! Let’s rip off the basket, regather as the church, and begin functioning as the body of Christ!

Over the weekend, I watched (live) one of the most timely messages on this subject, and for this season. It originated from Calvary Chapel – Chino Hills who, against the state of California’s mandate, has indeed ripped off the basket and is shining the light! Such a word well spoken for our time. This is a “must see”! Enjoy!
