Celebrating Good News as We Close Out 2019! (Part 1)

While spending time with my family during Christmastime, I have had the cherished opportunity to dig into God’s Word without distractions and the pressure of other obligations. What treasures are found when undistracted moments are available!

I’ve been thinking about the “good news” of Christmas, and how “gospel” means “good news.” Indeed the gospel was delivered to the whole world when Jesus Christ was born. So, as we race toward the end of 2019, I want to share some thoughts gleaned from my study.

In the same region there were some shepherds staying out in the fields and keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord suddenly stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them; and they were terribly frightened. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people; 11 for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12 This will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” 13 And suddenly there appeared with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,
14 “Glory to God in the highest,
And on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased.”

~Luke 2:8-14

In sheep fields of Bethlehem that glorious night of Jesus’ birth, an angel proclaimed “good news of great joy which will be for all the people!” Something miraculous happened that brought great joy. Jesus was born! Hallelujah!

This was the Christ-child of whom the prophet Isaiah had foretold:

For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us;
And the government will rest on His shoulders;
And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.
There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace,
On the throne of David and over his kingdom,
To establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness
From then on and forevermore.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will accomplish this.

~Isaiah 9:6-7

The birth of Jesus fulfilled many prophecies, but this one describes Him in wondrous ways: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. Oh, how we all search for the very things He freely gives:

  • Wonderful Counselor: Divine guidance to lead us through a world which is ugly, and is not our home!
  • Mighty God: One who is willing and able to watch over us and protect us in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation.
  • Eternal Father: The promise He will never leave us nor forsake us…EVER! His love and His care are eternal.
  • Prince of Peace: A peace that surpasses all understanding, and is able to sustain us no matter what comes our way!

Yes, the Gospel…the Good News…embodied in a baby, was delivered to us that day, just as Isaiah prophesied, and as Luke reported. But, here’s the question: Have we joined with the heavenly hosts in praising God and saying:

“Glory to God in the highest,
And on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased.”

I’ve been guilty of neglect, but I’m making it my mission to close out the year glorifying God in the highest, and I believe it will set the tone for the new year! Will you join me?

Check back tomorrow for more thoughts. I pray your new year begins with a glorious tone as well, and I’ll do my best to draw us into that special place!
