Do We Understand the Enemy?

Here in the United States we have had a very “political week!”  On Tuesday evening we endured what some have called “Fantasy Hour,” as President Obama delivered the annual State of the Union address.  Last night, those interested were treated to a Republican debate that often appeared more like a debate on the Senate floor!  Election year politics is definitely ramping up.

Cutting through the “politics” to discern candidates’ positions is critical if we are to be highly informed and educated voters.  Though integrity and morality are my most important standards when considering candidates, I don’t think any of us can afford not to ask a very important question when considering our next Commander-in-Chief: Of all the candidates, which ones truly understand our enemy, and put forth plans to deal with the enemy?

Our current administration has clearly proven they don’t know the enemy.  While Iran blatantly violates security sanctions, the Obama team hails Iran’s release of 10 American sailors as a “sign of warmer relations.”  Meanwhile, Jordan’s King Abdullah was in Washington on official business, yet President Obama could not find even thirty minutes to squeeze in a meeting with one of our greatest Middle East allies.  There are certainly candidates on both the Democratic and Republican sides who fail to recognize who our enemies are, and seem to lack the discernment to know the difference between enemies and allies.

This is a crucial issue and I still believe there are only 4 candidates who have clearly articulated their understanding of the enemy, and have taken a strong stance in regard to the enemy.  Yes, in a sense, I am referring to both literal, earthly enemies, as well as our spiritual enemy.  I believe these 4 candidates know and understand both!

Our earthly enemies are many, but the most threatening: Radical, apocalyptic Islam in all its forms.  Iran and ISIS happen to be in the spotlight now, but there are many, many jihadist groups determined to create chaos in our world.  In fact, they are more prevalent in America than most people realize.  Need evidence?  Check out this video:

So, what’s my point?  Really, there are two:

  1. This may be the most important presidential election in our lifetime.  As Christians, it is more important than ever to know and understand the candidates’ positions, and then to vote your values.
  2. Our only hope is in Jesus Christ, but it is a great hope!  We must pray.  Pray for our country, the candidates, and for God to grant us a Josiah!

Christian soldiers, let’s march to the beat of our heavenly Commander-in-Chief!  Be fervent in prayer and faithful in casting God-honoring ballots.
