Only days removed from a joyous visit to Israel, I am keenly aware of a prevailing sense of impending chaos in America. Despite all that Israel faces, I felt such a sense of peace there. When I returned to the US, however, I was struck by just how chaotic things are becoming.
For example, the front-running Republican presidential candidate is a loud-mouthed, billionaire reality TV star; while the Democratic front-runner lied about email use and (while Secretary of State) ignored pleas for help from the American ambassador to Libya who ultimately lost his life due to lack of attention to his security needs. Recipes for disaster if either were to be elected President.
Yet, America has more solid, conservative candidates than at any other time I can think of. Indeed, I have guarded optimism that America could experience a great awakening if Christians will unite together to support a like-minded candidate, and will diligently humble ourselves, pray, seek His face and turn from our wicked ways (2 Chronicles 7:14). However, both Donald Trump and Ben Carson have threatened to run as independents should they not win the Republican nomination. That would almost certainly split the Conservative vote and hand the presidency to Hilary Clinton. Again, a recipe for disaster.
I suspect that most of us are familiar with the first part of Psalm 33:12:
Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord…
However, do you know what the remainder of that verse says? Here is the verse in full:
Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord,
The people whom He has chosen for His own inheritance.
Who are the people whom He chose for His own inheritance? Yes, I believe His chosen people are the Jews! True, as Christians, we are “grafted in” and are counted among “His people.” But the point is that our nation is definitely not functioning as chosen people would. In fact, I believe our nation will be forced to deal with difficult realities very soon, short of a Third Great Awakening.
So, are we on the verge of an implosion in America, or will we experience a great awakening? If our nation is to be blessed, we must pray for the Lord to grant us a great awakening. Our electoral system is proving that Washington can’t fix our problems. Outlandish views of front-running candidates proves that Washington can’t fix our problems. Only the Lord can fix our problems! Then, perhaps the sense of peace I felt in Israel will become reality in our nation!
Pray for our country, my friends….and pray for the peace of Jerusalem!
PS: I was blessed as I meditated on the entire chapter of Psalm 33. I invite you to be blessed as well!
