Of all present dangers in the world today, we are being told by our president that the worst of all is climate change! Woe to those of us whose vision is dimmed by worldly things and whose senses are dulled by man’s fallible ideas.
Before I explain what I mean, I want to emphasize three things:
- God gave us a mandate to take care of the earth. In Genesis 1:28, God actually blessed mankind and gave us the responsibility to subdue the earth. Both in the Garden of Eden before the fall (Genesis 2:15) and outside the Garden after the fall (Genesis 3:23), mankind was commanded to cultivate the earth. God intends for us to care for His creation. Thus, I am in favor of being good stewards of what God has created and given us responsibility to subdue and cultivate. Biblical principle is clear.
- Scripture is also very clear regarding being subject to (Romans 13:1-7) and honoring (1 Peter 2:13-17) our governing authorities. Thus, while I clearly disagree with positions taken by our president and other leaders, their authority is granted by God Himself, and we are to honor them. My intent is never to disparage our authorities, and I am not in favor of belittling or criticizing their position of authority, or them as people.
- We are, however, to be wise and discerning of good and evil. Throughout Scripture we are instructed to abhor what is evil and cling to what is good (Romans 12:9 and many other references). In addition, we are told to distinguish between those who serve God and those who do not (Malachi 3:18). So, while criticizing their positions of authority would not be right, discerning between right and wrong in regard to their stance on issues is important if we are to abhor evil and cling to what is good.
Now to my point. First, though many try to convince us differently, there are very conflicting conclusions about climate change and global warming. It is far from a settled issue. As recently as the 1970’s scientists were talking about global cooling! (See research from a Biblical perspective here and here.) This issue is a worldview issue, based upon whether or not God’s Word is the foundational authority, and whether or not God is really in control.
Secondly, this is a moral issue, used for political purposes. The political wave is to devalue human life while valuing nature. Let’s take care of the atmosphere, the trees, the whales, the animals, etc…while killing millions of unborn babies? Yes, the atmosphere, trees, whales and animals SHOULD be cared for, but not of greater priority than human life. It is absurd to point to climate change as the greatest threat on the planet when hundreds of thousands of people are being tortured and killed because of their faith or because they disagree with radical Islamists. Genocide is rampant in Syria, Iraq, North Africa, North Korea, and many other places. Yet, climate change is a greater threat?
Of course President Obama sounds very persuasive in his video, touting his desire to “keep our children safe” from the harms of climate change. Yet, he favors abortion and does very little to rescue the children threatened by rape, torture and murder at the hands of terrorists. Why are we not keeping those children safe? It seems to me that the video is simply a promotion of Earth Day…a day to worship the creation rather than the Creator. Soon, he will spend millions of taxpayer dollars globetrotting in an effort to convince other world leaders to join his initiative to take control of climate change. (Sounds like a God-sized job to me!)
My conclusion is this: we are beginning to reap a harvest of bad seed. There was a time in Israel’s history where “everyone did what was right in his own eyes,” and evil rose up. That is happening in America and around the globe. Rather than focusing on what is right and righteous, we are seeing a tremendous devaluing of moral absolutes. Life has increasingly less value. There is no great movement to save the lives of babies or people in harms way, yet millions are being spent on climate change.
But despite the dark picture, there is good news! God is not surprised by all this, and in fact, evil in this world was prophesied:
But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come. For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God.
~2 Timothy 3:1-4
Friends, we can rest assured that the same God who accurately predicted what will happen in the last days, is the same God who promises to rescue believers from the wrath that is to come (1 Thessalonians 1:10)! Aren’t you glad we have that hope? The Blessed Hope of Jesus Christ!
