The 69th session of the United Nations General Assembly opened about 10 days ago, and “high-level meetings” commenced on September 22. The general debate began on September 24 and will continue until September 30. But, what is really going on at the United Nations?
Established after WWII to promote international cooperation, world leaders gather annually in New York City to “maintain international peace and security…develop friendly relations among nations…achieve international cooperation in solving international problems.” (According to the UN Charter) But, is that what is truly happening? Here’s a very brief summary of some of the goings on at this year’s gathering:
- Iranian President Hassan Rouhani blamed the west for Middle East extremism
- Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan questioned the legitimacy of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, to which Egypt accuses Erdogan of supporting terrorists
- Fatah and Hamas agree to re-institute a “unity government” that will have control of the Gaza Strip (despite major conflicts between the two, including this, this, and this)
- Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas accused Israel of racism, war crimes, apartheid and genocide
- While Secretary of State John Kerry is speaking to the UN Security Council about ISIS, they release a video labeling President Obama the “mule of the Jews,” and John Kerry an “old uncircumcised geezer,” out-of-touch and ineffective
Those things certainly don’t seem to promote international peace and security, nor do they seem to develop friendly relations among nations and people groups. And there is certainly no indication of cooperation in solving international problems.
Dear friends, all the issues above have one common denominator: Islam. When false theology is perpetrated by evil leaders, and when anger and hatred boil over, the end result is extremism and often violence. Not only does the UN lack the power to do anything about it, but they perpetuate it by allowing evil men to spew venom from the UN podium, and by overlooking the true crimes of leaders and nations with well-documented evil intent.
There is a power struggle in our world today…a struggle between righteousness and evil. I am reminded of a proverb:
He who is steadfast in righteousness will attain to life,
And he who pursues evil will bring about his own death.
~Proverbs 11:19
Be encouraged, Christ followers! Regardless of what goes on at the UN or elsewhere in our world, our Righteous Redeemer will win out, and evil will be defeated!
