America Celebrates 250: How Revivals Shaped America

As we celebrate America’s 250th birthday, we would be remiss to ignore the Judeo-Christian foundation upon which our nation was built. Yesterday we focused on the obvious impact God’s Word had on our founders, and how they readily acknowledged the need to establish and maintain our nation upon that foundation.

To dive deeper into the importance of those Judeo-Christian roots, we will turn our sights toward the revivals that seem to have been the lifeblood coursing through the veins of early-America. To those who know America’s real history, it is impossible to deny the providence of God in the shaping of our country.

Our early history was characterized by three Great Awakenings, revivals that miraculously occurred by divine appointment to sustain and strengthen our nation in times of extreme difficulty. It was as though God was determined to make the great American experiment a success! Frankly, I believe God has had a specific calling upon America from the very beginning. That calling is to reach the world with the Good News of Jesus Christ, and we have not yet finished the task!

Today, as you contemplate our nation’s 250th birthday, be reminded that it is only by the providence of Almighty God, and not of ourselves, that America survived those early years. Take a look:

America is a blessed nation. As Christians, we yearn for another Great Awakening to realign our current values and beliefs with those of our forefathers. It requires each Christian to turn fully to God and to entrust ourselves to Him completely. Can you imagine the revival that would take place in America if every Christian denied himself, took up his cross, and followed Jesus as Matthew 16:24 commands?

Is our nation worth it? Are we willing to do what it takes? Time will tell.

PS: Fly the American flag proudly, especially this 250th Independence Day! If you don’t have one, make a quick trip to your favorite department store or home improvement store, then put it on display. Our nation is worth celebrating!
