Who Do the Feet of Iron and Clay Represent?

Welcome back study friends! We’ll pick up our discussion from yesterday concerning Jerusalem being a heavy stone, and the coming of a prophetic empire represented by feet of iron and clay. If you missed that post, it may be helpful to read it before proceeding with today’s post!

As Zechariah 12:2-3 indicates, Jerusalem will become a cup of drunkenness and a very heavy stone to those who try to heave it. As Daniel 2 illustrates, a succession of empires (Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece, and Rome) who indeed ruled in ancient times. But the prophecy also predicts a last-days empire illustrated as feet of iron and clay. Scholars have different thoughts about the identity of those iron and clay feet, and that part of the prophecy has not yet been fulfilled.

So, we left off yesterday with the question: Who do the feet of iron and clay represent? We may all have different perspectives and that’s okay. But one thing we know: iron and clay do not mix. Thus, there is some credence in the idea that iron and clay may represent the diametrically opposed ideologies of Judeo-Christian thought and Marxism/Communism/Islamic thought.

In today’s world, few would doubt the fierce battle lines being drawn between freedoms of the west (based on Judeo-Christian principles) and tyranny of the deadly confluence of Marxism, Communism, and Islam.

Muslim immigration that has flooded Europe (and to a lesser degree, America) has brought with it radical elements of Islam. Those ideals have somehow coalesced with Marxism and Communism to form a system dominated by an extreme thirst for power.

Clay has been thrown in with iron as the immigrant invasion has begun to reshape culture and civilization founded upon Judeo-Christian principles. Europe is further down the road in trading Christian values for radical Islamism, but the US is not far behind. Powering that radicalism is the intense desire for worldwide power. Conquering Europe is only part of the strategy. Re-establishing Islamic dominance first in the Middle East, then in the world, is the ultimate goal.

Who stands in their way? Jews and Christians, whose principles are radically opposed to the power-craven followers of the Quran. Anti-Israel propaganda has been hot and heavy since the rebirth of the state of Israel. The UN, the International Court, the European Union and others all consistently and overtly hate Israel and work toward their demise. Yet, Jerusalem is the heavy stone of which they hurt themselves trying to heave.

Now, to Daniel 2:34:

34 You watched while a stone was cut out without hands, which struck the image on its feet of iron and clay, and broke them in pieces.

Read all of Daniel 2 to study this prophecy in full context. But here, the prophet clearly states the feet of iron and clay will be broken in pieces by a stone cut out without hands. What (or who) is that stone? Read Isaiah 28:16 and Ephesians 2:19-22. Jesus, the Chief Cornerstone, will crush the gold, the silver, the bronze, the iron and the feet of iron and clay to establish His Kingdom! (Daniel 2:45)

But there is one other thing to know about the Chief Cornerstone. Read 1 Peter 2:4-8.

  • Jesus, the Living Stone chosen by God, was nevertheless rejected by men.
  • Those who believe in Him, the Chief Cornerstone, become living stones and will not be put to shame!
  • Jesus is the Chief Cornerstone, a stone of stumbling to some (the Jewish people) and a rock of offense. Is it any wonder that Jerusalem has become that heavy stone?

The persistent determination of Israel’s enemies to destroy her will be their demise. And somewhere along the way (at the end of the tribulation), the stumbling stone that causes Jews (in general) to stumble over the truth, will be removed and the Chief Cornerstone…Jesus Himself…will save His people!

Friends, iron and clay cannot endure. Opposing ideologues and nations will one day stand before the Chief Cornerstone and will be judged for how they treated Israel (Joel 3:2).

Perhaps it’s best not to try heaving heavy stones!

UPDATE: This post, written prior to the latest Tucker Carlson dust up with US Ambassador Mike Huckabee, this over the target when it comes to heavy stones. Though Carlson is not an enemy nation, antisemitism makes him a personal enemy of Israel (and one who, unfortunately, has great influence). Perhaps he should heed the warning about heaving heavy stones.
