We rejoice and thank God when the candidate of our choice wins an election. For conservatives, Trump’s election as US President in 2024 was hailed as God’s favor upon our nation. But what about Biden’s election 4 years earlier? Was it also the favor of God…or did God suddenly turn His focus away and, “oops!”

Well, consider Biblical history. God put evil rulers such as Nebuchadnezzar, Pontius Pilate, and Adolf Hitler in positions of leadership and power. Each was antisemitic and brought great hardship and disaster upon the Jewish people. Yet Scripture tells us God is sovereign, including over nations and leaders that rise and fall. None rise or fall apart from His sovereign will.

Yes, God raises up and brings down nations and leaders. It doesn’t diminish our responsibilities to live out our faith in the public square and to engage civically. But in the end, our Savior is not elected, but is the Sovereign God over the entire universe. We can trust Him!
