Hebrew is the native tongue of Israelis. But did you know the language once died out and was brought back to life? Following the Roman conquest of Jerusalem in 70 AD, Jews were scattered around the world, integrating over many years into the cultures in which they found themselves. Those exiled to Russia spoke Russian, Jews in Europe spoke the languages of the nations in which they settled, and so it was that wherever they settled, the local language took precedent in order to function in new locales. Hebrew soon faded, and over the centuries was lost almost entirely.
But the Word of God in Old Testament times was written in Hebrew and it would come full circle once, by God’s decree, the Jewish people returned to their promised land! It is a miraculous story of how, after almost 2,000 years, a single family who never ceased speaking Hebrew in their home, brought it back to their native land. Through that one family (Ben Yehuda), the language was revived and is alive and well in Israel today! Beginning at sundown tonight, Jews will celebrate Hebrew Language Day!
A restored language is one of many miracles of Israel, and it is through the Hebrew language that Israelis are hearing about Jesus in these last days! These are exciting times.
Here is a recent account of how Hebrew is playing a major role in bringing Jewish people face-to-face with their Messiah, and how the Gospel is also going out to the Gentiles in the land as well:
