Walking in Darkness and Seeing a Great Light

Ready or not, Christmas is upon us. Everyone seems to look forward to Christmas, but few slow down enough to truly enjoy it. I’m guilty of “busyness” that robs the joy of Christmas, but with changing life circumstances, I’m determined to slow down this Christmas and bask in the joyful celebration of our Savior’s birth. I hope you do the same!

The world in which we live is dark, and seemingly growing darker every day. Over the past few days, we focused on darkness invading our world, and the need to look to Jesus. I am reminded of Isaiah 9:2 that references people walking in darkness but seeing a great light.

Jesus is that great light, and we celebrate His birth soon! Isaiah’s audience is the Jewish people, but it seems we can borrow from the context to believe that Jesus brought good news into the darkness of the world, not just Israel. Jesus is the Light of the World (John 8), and we know that when He proclaimed that, Jesus and His family were in Jerusalem for the Feast of Lights (aka: Hanukkah or Feast of Dedication), according to John 10:22.

In Isaiah’s prophecy, darkness and light represent sin and salvation. Without Christ, we are lost in darkness. But praise God He came to earth as a baby, born in Bethlehem, as the sacrificial Lamb of God who takes away our sin! Jesus, the Light, brings salvation!

Darkness in our lives can feel overwhelming at times. Sin or sadness or difficulties can seem unbearable, while the light of righteousness and joy seem hidden. If you are in that place, take heart today. Isaiah promised a Savior and God promised a Light. The birth of Jesus was the fulfillment of both! You may feel drowned in darkness, but darkness has to flee when light shines. Jesus, the Light of the World, is shining on you. Step out from under the bushel and bask in His light!

Isaiah went on to prophesy about Jesus:

For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
    Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
    Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Of the greatness of his government and peace
    there will be no end.
~Isaiah 9:6-7a

We sing those words in our Christmas songs, but do we truly believe them? The prophecy is not totally fulfilled yet, but in the hearts of believers, Jesus is the Prince of Peace!

Believing friends, look to Jesus as you celebrate His birth this year. Slow down and take some quiet time to meditate upon Isaiah’s words. Allow the Light of the World to shine in you and through you this Christmas.

To my friends who do not yet know Jesus personally, please consider His offer. He was born and lived a sinless life so that He could be the spotless sacrificial Lamb of God. He has already died for your sins and mine. All we must do is accept His gift of salvation. It’s the greatest gift you will ever receive, so receive it this Christmas!
