Note: This post was written prior to America’s attack on Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan on Saturday. The circumstances are certainly different now, but the point remains the same: Jerusalem will continue to be a heavy stone, and our trust must be rooted in Jesus and nothing else! Enjoy!
It is a sad state of affairs. Conservatives in America are often hell bent on shooting one another in the foot, and Tucker Carlson and Ted Cruz presented the perfect example in a recent podcast. While Carlson tried to hang up Ted Cruz with a series of fairly irrelevant “gotcha” questions, Cruz attempted Biblical references regarding standing with Israel, without the ability to back up his position. (Daniel Cohen’s report, linked above, is definitely worth watching.)
The subject matter was, of course, whether or not the US should enter the Israeli-Iranian conflict, an issue that has proven divisive among American conservatives, particularly the “MAGA base.” As if there is not enough struggle against evil ideologies from the radical left, we tear one another apart on the right.
Healthy debate is one thing, but when two men argue like little boys, it is just not helpful, and it diverts attention in the wrong direction. Here is the rub: Donald Trump campaigned on keeping America out of war, a very noble campaign promise. But he has also made it very clear for over 10 years that Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon. So, “isolationists” such as Tucker Carlson, Candace Owens, Steve Bannon, Marjorie Taylor Green, Rand Paul, Matt Gaetz and others demand that America sits on the sidelines, no matter what. Meanwhile, “hawks” such as Ted Cruz, Tom Cotton, (the very unlikable) Lindsay Graham, and others are viewed to be stanchly obsessed with America rushing into the conflict, bombing Fordow and forcing regime change in Iran.
I’m sure every American has an opinion, likely falling somewhere in between those two extremes. I certainly do…but that is NOT the issue here. Regardless of our geopolitical viewpoints, we are wise to consider what God’s Word has to say about things, then adjust our positions accordingly. It is not necessarily an either/or proposition, and it is quite possible God has a plan none of us have even thought of!
Let’s talk biblically!
The prophet Zechariah warns that, in the last days, focus will be upon Jerusalem, and that is definitely where the focus lies in this scenario! The prophet tells us Jerusalem will become a burdensome (heavy) stone that will severely injure those who try to heave it aside. (Zechariah 12) In other words, Jerusalem will be a huge issue in the last days and there will be many “positions” regarding Israel. Those who try to interfere (one way or the other) rather than submit to God’s plan for Israel will find themselves injured.
One example of “injury” could be that those who typically sit on the same side of the political aisle will become fractured because they would rather be deemed “right” in their argument than seek to simply stand with and support Israel. In this example, petty “gotcha” games and one-upmanship drives a wedge between conservatives. Instead of childish games, we should ask, “What does God’s Word have to say about how we stand with Israel?” (If you missed Saturday’s post, I strongly encourage you to check it out. It will answer that question!)
If we as believers and followers of Jesus Christ truly trust the Word of God to be our guide, then let’s stop arguing and start believing that we can firmly place our trust in the Lord our God, rather than in chariots (Psalm 20:7) or military might! It is very easy, in the midst of “shock and awe” to believe military might will win the day. Yet there is so much more to the equation than the quick (but perhaps short-lived) victory celebration. If the Lord directs those steps, American military effort will surely be victorious. But if not, we should not expect the Lord to bless our ill-fated ideas. (America did take action, so we shall see what comes of it.)
The point is not to pick a side, but to seek and yield our will to His with everything we’ve got. God’s Word is clear that we are to stand with Israel, and God is plenty capable of granting wisdom to those in charge of making such decisions. Let’s pray that, as the sovereign God of the universe makes His wisdom known, leaders of Israel and the US will have ears to hear and courage to do only what God commands. Their duty is to call the shots. Our duty is to pray!
PS: Now that American forces have struck Iran’s nuclear facilities, it is more important than ever to trust in God’s Word and pray for world leaders. Bantering back and forth and protesting in the streets will get us nowhere.
