It is never easy to say goodbye to the Galilee area. So much of Jesus’ ministry occurred within that area and so many great memories are created there. But alas, we’ve still got much to see and experience, so the Kinneret (another name for the Sea of Galilee) disappears in the rearview mirror as we journey south through the Jordan River Valley to the Dead Sea area.
On the way, we visit Bet She’an, an ancient Greco-Roman city, gaze across the Jordan River which serves as the border with the nation of Jordan, and ultimately see the Dead Sea come into view. We leave the plush, fertile farmland of the north to be met by barren desert in the south. It is quite a contrast but provides fantastic visuals of Biblical places and events. For example, David wrote several psalms in both the northern and southern reaches of Israel, often while he was being pursued by Saul. Seeing those places gives new depth of understanding to David’s writings.
