What Did the Taliban Get? How Should We View It?

The Taliban is officially in control of Afghanistan. This graphic recently came out regarding the $85 billion worth of American military equipment left to the Taliban when US soldiers evacuated Bagram Airbase:

Indeed, the US gave up a lot of firepower to one of the world’s largest and most dangerous terrorist organizations. True, the Taliban is now able to either make use of it (against American interests) or sell some of it to American enemies such as the Chinese or Iran. Either way, through earthly eyes, that is damaging to US military efforts.

However, through spiritual eyes, we are able to see things quite differently!

Some trust in chariots, and some in horses;
But we will remember the name of the Lord our God.

~Psalm 20:7

As believers, aren’t you glad our trust is not in military might, foreign policy brilliance or strategic genius? If so, our hope would be in short supply these days! Instead, the name of the Lord our God is our hope!

And those who know Your name will put their trust in You;
For You, Lord, have not forsaken those who seek You.

~Psalm 9:10

20 Our soul waits for the Lord;
He is our help and our shield.
21 For our heart shall rejoice in Him,
Because we have trusted in His holy name.
22 Let Your mercy, O Lord, be upon us,
Just as we hope in You.

~Psalm 33:20-22

Jesus Himself even repeated a promise, spoken through the prophet Isaiah, specifically to us Gentiles:

And in His name Gentiles will trust.

~Matthew 12:21

Friends, we can safely take our eyes off the “chariots and horses” of military power, and place our trust firmly in the name (and reputation!) of the Lord our God. He’s got this!
