News agencies around the world have announced that Iranian Foreign Minister, Javad Zarif, the mastermind behind the 2015 nuclear deal, has resigned. No source has identified the reason for his resignation, and speculation runs rampant regarding the unexpected announcement.
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo tweeted: “We note [Zarif’s] resignation. We’ll see if it sticks. Either way, he and [Iran President] @HassanRouhani are just front men for a corrupt religious mafia. We know [Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei] makes all final decisions. Our policy is unchanged — the regime must behave like a normal country and respect its people.”
After meeting with an activist group yesterday, Zarif was not seen later in the day as Syrian President Bashar al-Assad met with the Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.
Zarif’s resignation leaves President Rouhani minus perhaps his greatest ally in negotiations with the West. Meanwhile, according to some, Rouhani is facing political pressure as the nuclear deal unravels and the country’s economy continues to tank amidst American-led sanctions.
It remains to be seen how this development impacts the Islamic Republic. Let’s pray for the ultimate defeat of the evil Iranian regime, and that Iranian people can escape from the tyranny of the “corrupt religious mafia.”
