God Proclaims the Gospel to Abraham… for Our Benefit!

We’re off to a great start in our study of three great Bible covenants.  Yesterday we found that the first great covenant, the Abrahamic Covenant, is the covenant of DECISION.  Why?  Because God decided:

  • Israel would be the vehicle of world redemption.
  • ALL the families of the earth would be benefactors.

Glory to God!  You and I have salvation through a promise God made to Abraham and fulfilled through his descendants.

But, how did that take place?  Let’s look at a passage we’ve studied on this blog before:

Know then that it is those of faith who are the sons of Abraham. And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “In you shall all the nations be blessed.” So then, those who are of faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.
~Galatians 3:7-9

If you ever question the Jewish roots of our Christian faith, review that passage!  Those who are of faith are sons of Abraham!  You and I…”those of faith”…are Abraham’s offspring.  That does not make us Jewish, by the way, but simply Gentiles who have entered into the faith of the Gospel, first preached by God to Abraham!

Amazing!  It is the “grafted in” idea.  God prepared a way for us Gentiles to enter salvation because, through Abraham, Israel became the vehicle of world redemption!  After God preached the Gospel to Abraham, He said, “In you [Abraham] shall all the nations be blessed.”

Jewish roots…for sure!

Thus, we know that the Abrahamic Covenant established Israel as the vehicle of world redemption.  God is, even now, using that vehicle to bring redemption to the world, though the Jewish people (for the most part) do not recognize the Messiah doing the work!  But one day (soon!), God will complete the “time of the Gentiles” and will unveil the eyes of the chosen people, Israel, and all Israel will be saved.  (Romans 11:26)

Yet, the Abrahamic Covenant, on its own, cannot do all that God promised.  Not because God couldn’t have done so.  But because the human race was thrown so out of kilter by sin, He chose to reveal His character in multifaceted ways.  Purposefully, God made other covenants so that all will have access to His promises!

The grace of God.  Simply unfathomable.

We’ll push back from the study table for now, but slide back in tomorrow when we look at the next great Bible covenant, and its place in fulfillment of God’s promises!
