On My Way!

During the Temple period, Israelites regularly traveled considerable distances to attend the major feasts (Passover, Pentecost and Tabernacles) of Israel.  Though we recognize Israel as a small country (about the size of New Jersey), it was still a considerable journey on foot or the back of a donkey.  Large groups would often travel together, sleeping in caves and other places of shelter they found along the way.

What motivated them to go?  Perhaps several things, but going to the house of the Lord (the Temple) was very likely the most compelling reason.  You see, that is where the glory of the Lord was found!  Various feasts celebrated various things, but the central theme was God’s presence, particularly at feast time.  Thus, they would travel for miles to get there.

I’m traveling to Israel today because I, too, am compelled!  Please understand, the Temple no longer stands (it was destroyed in 70 AD), and I don’t expect to find the glory of the Lord there.  The Bible teaches that the Lord now “tabernacles” (dwells) in the hearts of believers (Romans 8:9-11, 1 Corinthians 3:16,  1 Corinthians 6:19-20), and Jesus Himself is the fulfillment of every Jewish feast!  Thus, the glory of the Lord indwells us through the Holy Spirit!

However, I am compelled because there is something special about going “up to Jerusalem.”  Israel is not a perfect place, and the the people are not perfect people…but it is still God’s chosen land and God’s chosen people.  To be there brings a sense of “hominess” to me, and I’ve heard other believers say likewise.  The reason for that lies in Romans 11, and I shared the details in Welcome to the Holy City.  I encourage you to read that!

As the Israelites journeyed to the Holy City, they sang songs of ascent. I plan to do the same enroute to Israel!  Those are recorded in Psalms 120-134, and they would have sung, “I was glad when they said unto me, let us go unto the house of the Lord!”

During your days off for Thanksgiving, I encourage you to read slowly through one or two of those psalms each day, picturing in your mind what it must have been like to travel the long distance, then to see the glorious temple atop Mount Moriah!  (It could be seen for miles, and the gold crown would have glistened in the sunlight!  What an incredibly glorious sight!)

I have a jam-packed itinerary as I participate in the Christian Leaders Seminar beginning Sunday.  However, Lord willing and as time allows, I will share more with you as I journey.  Stay tuned…and I pray you are blessed!
