More and more, we hear the accusation that Israel is an apartheid state. I heard that term used in reference to Israel on a news broadcast a few days ago. But is it true? Let’s consult Merriam-Webster to consider what apartheid means:
- racial segregation; specifically : a former policy of segregation and political and economic discrimination against non-European groups in the Republic of South Africa
- separation, segregation
Dictionary.com defines it this way:
- (in the Republic of South Africa) a rigid former policy of segregating and economically and politically oppressing the nonwhite population
- any system or practice that separates people according to color, ethnicity, caste, etc
Get the picture? Now, let’s look back a year to the broken Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, which is when the accusations most recently were re-kindled. How did it happen?
- A frustrated US Secretary of State John Kerry blurted the words out following the collapse of his ill-advised peace plan. Israel risks becoming an apartheid state if peace talks fail
- Liberal media outlets pushed it to new heights by reporting Kerry is wrong: Israel is already an apartheid state
- All hell broke loose, then, as fringe elements on both ends of the spectrum exaggerated claims in an attempt to make their point. Does the term ‘apartheid’ fit Israel? Of course it does! versus Israel isn’t, and will never be, an apartheid state
So, which is it? Well, take a few minutes to view the video below and make up your own mind!
