Since the 1979 Iranian Revolution, the ayatollahs have marched toward developing a worldwide caliphate and ushering in the twelfth imam (Islamic messiah). Part of their plan is to destroy Israel (“Little Satan”) and the US (“Great Satan”). Interestingly, though, the US has entered negotiations with Iran regarding their nuclear program. The American administration seems to be oblivious to the fact that this is a religious/ideological issue, not a political one. The Iranian regime believes that Allah has called them to bring about chaos in order to usher in the Islamic messiah.
Negotiations between the P5+1 (US, Great Britain, France, Germany, China, Russia) and Iran have been ongoing since 2006, with the ultimate goal of coming to agreement regarding Iran’s move toward nuclear weapons. All along, Iran has stated that its nuclear ambitions are for peaceful purposes…yet they have denied inspectors access to their nuclear facilities (part of the agreement), stockpiled uranium, and put 19,000 centrifuges online. All clear signs that Iran’s nuclear ambitions are not peaceful.
Today, the Jerusalem Post and The New York Times (as well as many other news outlets) reported that the United States is considering a nuclear deal that includes Russia. Under the proposal, much of Iran’s uranium would be shipped to Russia, where it would be converted into fuel rods for Iran’s Bushehr nuclear power plant, Iran’s only commercial reactor. Once converted to fuel rods, it is difficult to convert to nuclear weapons. Sounds good…but is it really?
The US is pushing hard to be the hero in negotiations before the current American administration goes out of office. However, this appears to be a case of cozying up to the enemy. Russia certainly does not have Israel’s or the US’s best interests in mind. Beyond that, though, let’s look at this arrangement from a potentially prophetic perspective.
Ezekiel 38 details a northern invasion of Israel, led by Russia and Iran! These two nations will surely join forces in the last days. Moreover, Russian President Vladimir Putin is always very willing to step on to the world stage to grab power. This lines up very well with the characteristics of Gog, the leader of the northern coalition. Though it is too early to cast Putin as Gog, he is certainly becoming more and more Gog-like.
Though a former US Undersecretary of State describes this as a good deal for Israel, it is hard to believe that cooperation between Russia and Iran can be anything but troublesome. Let’s pray for great wisdom for all P5+1 leaders as they negotiate this nuclear deal. As Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated continually, “No deal is better than a bad deal.” Let’s hope that the pursuit of heroism does not lead American negotiators to a bad deal.
After all, Iran has its sights set on the “Great Satan!”
