Before Jesus endured crucifixion, He endured flogging that was brutal enough to kill most people. This excavated stone sits vertically on display, but was used horizontally to restrain a victim’s arms while bearing his back to lashings with nail and/or glass-tipped leather straps. Arms were pulled through the holes seen here, and held by Roman soldiers. That’s how our Lord was flogged.
