Golda: The Movie

Hey friends, there is an interesting movie out about former Israeli Prime Minister, Golda Meir, and I recommend it to those who enjoy good Israeli history. Golda, the only female PM in Israel’s history, was a strong woman who led the tiny nation through one if its darkest times.

Nothing taxed her ability to lead any more than the 19-day Yom Kippur War in which Israel was pushed to the brink of destruction and defeat. Fighting her own health challenges and mental demons while hearing reports of lost soldiers was devastating, yet against all odds, Golda persevered and ultimately led Israel to victory.

The movie chronicles her personal and national challenges and showcases her diplomatic skills in the midst of tremendous opposition, including a bit of reluctance from the Americans. The film also provides glimpses into Golda’s compassionate side tucked inside the tough exterior.

Personally, I enjoyed the 1:40 flick with a group of Israel-loving friends. Using old footage from wartime, mingled with accurate portrayals of the Yom Kippur War, the movie played out the drama before our eyes. Seeing even the frailty of Israeli leadership at times caused me to be all the more amazed at God’s faithfulness to protect Israel.

My only second thought about the movie was it left me thinking something was missing. As my friends and I chatted while leaving the theater, I realized what it was. A narrative I heard many years ago about the part President Richard Nixon’s mother played in the all-important aid provided by America. In Richard Nixon’s own words:

“I could almost hear my mother’s voice. She would tell me stories and read to me from the Old Testament, the heroes of the Bible. And one afternoon, she said, ‘Richard, someday you’re going to be in a position where you can help save Jewish people. And when that day comes, you must do everything in your power.’” (Originator unknown, but quoted here.)

As chaotic as the Nixon administration became, and despite Nixon’s forced resignation due to the Watergate scandal, I have no doubt that God placed Richard Nixon as President of the United States at such a time as that in order to show off His infinite goodness and ability to use any scoundrel for His purposes.

Perhaps there is hope for the scoundrels in America today…

PS: Though that part is not in the movie, to those interested in an inside glimpse of Israel’s history, I highly recommend it! Just keep in mind Nixon’s mother and the miraculous part she played in one of Israel’s darkest moments. Find out movie details here.
