Today is Labor Day in America. It is a patriotic day set aside to commemorate the labor movement that pushed our great nation into worldwide prominence. From a Christian perspective, it is a great opportunity to honor God and reflect His image. After all, it was He who created us from nothing, yet gave us dominion over the earth and commanded us to cultivate it (Genesis 1:28-30).

In the 1700’s God raised up a special nation, gave it a unique calling, and instilled Biblical principles into its founding. That nation was America. Escaping the religious tyranny of the British monarchy, men inspired by Holy Scripture drafted our founding documents. The Federalist Papers, our Constitution, our Declaration of Independence and our Bill of Rights were miraculously drafted and ratified, and the United States of America set out on the great experiment that guaranteed our rights to freedom.

Yet, the founding fathers knew this “experiment,” notably called a constitutional republic (not a democracy!), would succeed only if the country remained self-governed by the people.

Following four grueling months of chiseling out our “We the People” Constitution, a woman approached a tired, weary Benjamin Franklin and asked what sort of government it was. Franklin’s famous response:

Sadly, we have all but lost our Constitutional Republic. Why? Because “we the people” allowed “them the bureaucrats” to usurp power and take over our beloved country. It didn’t happen overnight. It has been a long, slow drip, easily ignored until, like the frog in a pot of water, we realize we are boiling.

Is it too late for America to recover? We don’t know, but the answer is a resounding YES if we do nothing. But if we return to our Christian roots, upon which our nation was built, there is hope! But understand, it is futile to trust non-Christians to lead that effort! It is up to us, American Christians, to:

• Know and understand God’s will and providence in entrusting this nation to us,
• Become authorities on our founding documents and exercise our rights therein,
• Forsake our comfort zone and get into the battle (as our Godly forefathers did).
