Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) begins at sundown today. (It is actually already after sundown in Israel, so Yom HaShoah has already begun there.) The official name of this Jewish observance is Yom HaZikaron laShoah ve-laG’vurah, meaning Day of Remembrance of the Holocaust and Heroism, and this is a most solemn day in Israel. Mid-morning on Yom HaShoah, sirens throughout Israel are sounded and the entire nation stops and stands in remembrance of the holocaust and in honor of heroes who helped rescue Jews during that dreadful persecution.
Here is a glimpse of what you would see in Israel:
Today, why not take a moment to remember the 6 million Jews (1.5 million of whom were children) murdered in the holocaust. Beyond that, however, consider the evil and genocide that is happening in our world today. ISIS, Boko Haram and other evil regimes are killing innocent people simply because of what they believe. Christian persecution is rampant. A holocaust of sorts is going on today, and just as the case in the Jewish holocaust, no one seems to be stepping up to stop it.
Believers, we may not be able to drive the big geopolitical or military engines of our world, but we most certainly can pray! We have direct access to the God of the Universe, so let’s pray to Him on behalf of people everywhere who are losing their lives because of their faith.
