Lawlessness: Delusions about the Value of Life

God will send upon them a deluding influence so that they will believe what is false.

~2 Thessalonians 2:11

As always, welcome back to our virtual study table! We’re focusing on Paul’s warning to the Thessalonians that the mystery of lawlessness is already at work in our world, but will take a little different angle today. We live in a season of delusion where many believe what is false.

We have looked at some examples already, but let’s hone in on another very clear example. The multi-billion dollar abortion industry kills about 40-50 million babies worldwide every year. In the US alone 4 of every 10 babies are aborted, at a rate about 3,000/day. (Stats according to Worldometer.)

In its 2018-2019 annual report, Planned Parenthood brags of 345,672 abortions (page 24) and over $1.6 BILLION in total revenue (page 27). If that’s not enough, they rake in hundreds of millions in government tax handouts, while investing $150 million in lobbying efforts. When COVID hit, very few clinics were shutdown, so abortions went on as usual (while those in need of legitimate medical procedures couldn’t get them).

Delusional. Holding the belief that killing babies is okay, despite the authoritative Word of God which tells us the opposite.

13 For You formed my inward parts;
You wove me in my mother’s womb.
14 I will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
Wonderful are Your works,
And my soul knows it very well.
15 My frame was not hidden from You,
When I was made in secret,
And skillfully wrought in the depths of the earth;
16 Your eyes have seen my unformed substance;
And in Your book were all written
The days that were ordained for me,
When as yet there was not one of them.

~Psalm 139:13-16

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you,
And before you were born I consecrated you.”

~Jeremiah 1:5

Behold, children are a gift of the Lord,
The fruit of the womb is a reward.
Like arrows in the hand of a warrior,
So are the children of one’s youth.
How blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them

~Psalm 127:3-5

You shall not murder.

~Exodus 20:13

Many in our society believe what is false. Strong delusion fell upon our nation and the world when those in power determined human life had no value and abortion was legalized. Abortion is not the only delusion, but it is a very obvious example of the mystery of lawlessness already at work in our world.

Yet, you, my friend, do not have to be sucked up in the delusion! As believers who trust God’s Word, we value human life. We understand it is precious to God, and it is precious to us.

So, what do we do in response to the delusion?

  • Pray for women contemplating abortion. May the Holy Spirit drive away the delusion so they might understand the value of the young life they consider snuffing out.
  • Be a voice for the unborn. Speak up! Debates are not necessary, but when the subject comes up in conversation, make your conviction known. Don’t be silent when it comes to the truth of God’s Word.
  • Communicate with your federal and state government officials and let them know where you stand on the issue. (Contact information for federal, state and local elected officials can be found here.)
  • Support organizations that provide loving support and alternatives to abortion. For example: Crisis Pregnancy Centers and local adoption agencies.

Now for this very reason also, applying all diligence, in your faith supply moral excellence, and in your moral excellence, knowledge….For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they render you neither useless nor unfruitful in the true knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

~2 Peter 1:5, 8

Our series on lawlessness is approaching an end, so be sure to take your seat at the virtual study table as we wind down!
